Ownhammer Studio Standard Plugin

Seems they've fixed the iLok issue with version 1.01. Got a newsletter email about it.

With the version 1.0.1 release, all that is needed now is an iLok account

Just read the email they sent out with more info, and also that early buyers will get a special plugin just for them, plus a lengthy explanation for the reasons there was only USB for DRM at release.

Maybe I’m sensitive but dudes, lay low with the we-pulled-50-hours-this-weekend-just-to-fix-this-for-you-ungrateful-people stuff. We get it, being a small company doing this stuff is hard. We all know about the state of the world, you don’t have to go through it all in a defensive manner.

Between the all over the place tone of voice in the release emails for this product and the after-the-fact explanations on the DRM I’m totally turned off on buying anything more from them.

I can add though that I’m not in the intended demographic for this plugin, since I want the same sounds available on HW as in my DAW, so there’s that. I have some Essentials IR packs that I really like though.

Yeah that email reads a lot like:

I really have to call bullshit on what "hard deadline May 30th" deadlines a freakin' cab sim plugin could have.

Also at no point did OwnHammer communicate "Don't worry, machine authorization support is coming!"

What hardware are you using?
Cab sims are either bought IRs or the cab block on a HX Stomp so running Native in the DAW. I would actually be interested in the Mesa cab this plugin offers since most of the time I gravitate towards V30’s, and the Helix version is nice.

Same as the discussion has been above it’s a PITA when there’s no Export IR function. But I totally understand that goes against the business cases for a lot of these plugins.

It probably never occurred to him that it would be necessary.

This is a one man operation right?

Sometimes you go really snow blind to things, especially when you're hyper focused on a particular goal.

It's also that if you allow people to export your IR's, then they can share them freely. So not only is it a "I wanna keep people inside my eco-system so they buy more products" but it is also a "I don't want my stuff to be pirated"

Both motivations, I fully understand and don't even disagree with. It is just a shame that this is how the world works. We can't have nice things because people are arseholes.

People were always able to do that with the IR file packs they've released before.

I don't see people dropping ML Sound Lab MIKKO 2 mix files all over the place either, it's more likely that the actual software will be cracked and pirated.

My take is that the people who would pirate a $60 cab sim software, or a $20 IR pack were never going to be your customers in the first place. So with inconvenient licensing systems or leaving out features like IR export, you are only reducing the value proposition for people who would otherwise buy your software.

Yes, I have some sympathy with this view as well. There's definitely a limit on the ROI for implementing copy protection systems.

I'm trying really hard to bite my tongue on my full purchase situation, but the below seems like a not great way to greet people who can now buy the plugin and use it without forcing USB ilok. Like great you worked overtime to fix it and now I can buy/use it hooray!... oh, you only want to reward the people that bought it with restrictive functionality?

I know im being a grinch to some degree and I see it from both sides but why wouldn't you use this as an opportunity to open the doors for 3-5 days and welcome new buyers....

Anyway my original order was refunded without a response and I'll keep my word and buy it again now that it's been fixed (off the back of people like me complaining after buying it on day one....).

"As mentioned previously, those of you who picked up the early bird version really came through for us, and thanks to you we're keeping a roof overhead and going to be cranking out more of the best plugins on the market. Ooooooh boy the things we have planned!

To say a thank you to each of you who helped keep the dream alive, we're going to be building a plugin made exclusively for you, and never publicly released. "

So, here's a video of the entire process of exporting, naming and trimming an IR from any cab tool you may think of.
Note: This is using a completely "unprepared" project. For my (by now rare) IR-woodshedding hours I have a dedicated project, yet speeding up the process.

- Have something playing.
- Place dirac on track.
- Solo track.
- Set bounce range around the dirac.
- Switch bounce options to mono.
- Bypass anything but the IR on that track (in the video anything but the cabs in HXN).
- Bounce.
- Trim (I'm doing it in WaveLab, but I could as well just do it in Logic).
- Done.

FFS, typing this took me longer than to record the lame example, capture the video, compress the video and uploading it.

Sorry, didn't solo the track in the video - but because I automatically placed the dirac where nothing else was playing anyway it works just the same (make sure no click is running if you do it that way).

Im trying to buy/use the app and Sasha's showing you European hax

And as a note: If you *really* want to export lots of IRs and do it often, very obviously it's gonna be a lot quicker in case your tools of trade support direct IR export. But if you only do it occasionally like me, it's possibly not worth spending your money. Add to this that with the method shown above, you can really mix and match whatever floats your boat (might require some DAW routing trickery, though).

Btw, I'm sure some inquiring minds could come up with clever Automator scripts on macOS, so everything I did in the video would be a one-click-operation. But I'm not an inquiring mind.

Is it only me or does the UI look quite junk and off putting? Not that it matters or anything.
Nah I called it out early in the thread.

It's definitely dated and made from a "where do we fit all these options?" point of view rather than "how do we make all these options user friendly?"

Look, even if you can setup a template project to do the IR capture, that's still a lot more complexity than a simple "Export IR -> choose desired format" dialog.

To me a lot of the best products out there regardless of what they do are ones that remove complication from my life. The less hoops I have to jump through, the better.

Sure. That's why I said that once you do it often, a dedicated tool might be worth it. For me, it's not. I mean, takes me a minute start to end.
Let alone that with the manual method, I can use whatever I feel like. I already used it to blend some of the cabs of Guitar Rig in as well. I also mixed some HX cabs with IRs. None of that is possible with any of the available tools.

It's surprising there isn't just a very simple "IR capture this track" plugin out there.
