Ran a couple ODs in front of this amp and didn’t really feel like the tones were any better than without. But then I tried my Dunlop MC404 CAE Wah, and woah…

My JVM is like that. I kind of like it without an OD, but for some reason I feel obligated to keep trying to slam it with one, or crank the bass and resonance so that an OD can cut it back out.

And let’s not forget: the DSL100HR is super affordable.

It’s the perfect 100W head for a guy who can’t come up with a single good excuse for buying a 100W head. :D

I find it odd at best that you give such high praise to an amp thats Fucked up.
If Marshall were still using Dagnall i doubt you'd have a transformer problem.

Yup you definitely don't need anything else. Except maybe

Get thee a fuzz.... or two..... or three and a delay. Then you're done.


Actually, probably best to get something wobbly just in case. But then you're definitely done.



Oh and a second delay to layer with the first. Then you're definitely 100% done.




And a reverb. :chef
 
DSL is one of the all time great amps, and is kind of a victim of its own success. If it cost 3 or 4 times the price people would talk about it in way higher esteem.

The hum is odd, I'd double check all cables and connections, and also just to be safe try swapping the valves. Hopefully its possible to exchange for one that doesn't have an issue if its not just something simple.

I don't see what's so "odd". I said what I like about it (plenty), and then I explained that this particular unit is defective. Neither mutually exclusive nor all that uncommon (especially for an imported product in this price bracket.)

Yeah, I really don't follow how 6CA7-A is managing to be more pissed about this than I am. I'm the one who shelled out the OMG-all-of-$700-including-tax on this one. I'm famous for my buyer's remorse but it simply doesn't apply here. I mean, sure, if a second or third defective amp arrives, then we'll talk.

No one's claiming that these are overbuilt mil-spec and/or boutiquey collectible amps. We're just saying they sound good.

Certainly underrated, yes. A couple of months ago I was at a show, and I liked the guy's tone enough to walk up and see he was running a JCM2000. This got me digging around trying to get a sense of the lineage (Marshall naming conventions melt my brain) between the JCM800, JCM2000, DSLxxx... Coincidentally, just a few days later, someone mentioned the DSL100HR import. I had no idea half these amps existed before then, let alone that the HR could be had new for less than a grand.

I thought about taking it apart and having a closer look at the transformer, but I figured MF would prefer I didn't. And part of the point of buying new is not having to bother. I'll let them have another stab at it - I've already returned the amp and a replacement is on the way. Hopefully FedEx will get this one to the right town, and hopefully this one will be in better health. (If not, then I'll concede that @6CA7-A had a point.)
