NAD: Marshall DSL100HR

If it's coming from the head it's the output transformer. It could be something simple, like the transformer not being properly bolted to the chassis but it could also be a problem with the transformer lamination. I'd get this head replaced.
Straightforward advice. Much appreciated. :beer

I’ll be calling the salesguy first thing in the morning. I just hope I don’t have to wait too long for a replacement - this thing is addictive!

Ran a couple ODs in front of this amp and didn’t really feel like the tones were any better than without. But then I tried my Dunlop MC404 CAE Wah, and woah…

OK, this is my first ever Marshall and I'm actually really loving it. It's surprisingly versatile, with more gain on tap than I expected. I'm loving the tones with nothing but guitar > cable > amp. Chugs like crazy. Great features, nice clean switching, etc. Easy on the wallet (Vietnamese import). And man, if looks could kill...

But nothing's ever quite that easy. I had a bitch of time actually getting ahold of the amp, and the moment I turned it on I began to suspect there was an issue. It makes a constant sine wave sound at approx. F#, a m3 below A440. It's almost imperceptible (but not imperceptible... you "can't unhear it") in standby, but it gets quite a bit louder when you flip the standby switch to low power or high power modes. At first I thought it was coming out of the cab, but it's actually coming right out of the head. The tubes are all glowing the right color, and I have a hunch that it's coming from the side where the transformer is.

I'll try to attach a recording. Does anyone have similar experiences to share or ideas on how to fix this? I really don't want to send this amp back. Everything else about it exceeds my expectations.

(Striking out here. I have a recording in m4a format. Does anyone know how I would go about attaching here? Anyway, just imagine a sine wave playing an F#, or approximately 310Hz. All. The goddamned. Time...)
Loves me a good DSL! :love

My JVM is like that. I kind of like it without an OD, but for some reason I feel obligated to keep trying to slam it with one, or crank the bass and resonance so that an OD can cut it back out.

Oh my, That's a big one!

And let’s not forget: the DSL100HR is super affordable.

It’s the perfect 100W head for a guy who can’t come up with a single good excuse for buying a 100W head. :D

I find it odd at best that you give such high praise to an amp thats Fucked up.
If Marshall were still using Dagnall i doubt you'd have a transformer problem.

Yup you definitely don't need anything else. Except maybe

Get thee a fuzz.... or two..... or three and a delay. Then you're done.

Actually, probably best to get something wobbly just in case. But then you're definitely done.

Oh and a second delay to layer with the first. Then you're definitely 100% done.

And a reverb. :chef

DSL is one of the all time great amps, and is kind of a victim of its own success. If it cost 3 or 4 times the price people would talk about it in way higher esteem.

The hum is odd, I'd double check all cables and connections, and also just to be safe try swapping the valves. Hopefully its possible to exchange for one that doesn't have an issue if its not just something simple.

I don't see what's so "odd". I said what I like about it (plenty), and then I explained that this particular unit is defective. Neither mutually exclusive nor all that uncommon (especially for an imported product in this price bracket.)

Insert Steve Martin in The Jerk meme. :D

😄 definitely not being the life of the party. easy, francis.

it happens these days, sadly. id be sorta annoyed myself, but they ARE good sounding amps, even if one got by qc with an issue!
Yeah, I really don't follow how 6CA7-A is managing to be more pissed about this than I am. I'm the one who shelled out the OMG-all-of-$700-including-tax on this one. I'm famous for my buyer's remorse but it simply doesn't apply here. I mean, sure, if a second or third defective amp arrives, then we'll talk.

No one's claiming that these are overbuilt mil-spec and/or boutiquey collectible amps. We're just saying they sound good.
