NAD: Marshall DSL100HR

That's good Mojo!! These show up all the time in my area in that $400-$600 range, you will find another pretty quick if you want to replace it.
I kinda do want to replace it. Every time i see my friend he says “that’s my sound”.

I had a PRS HDRX20 that I sold to a different friend. He tells me the same thing. Apparently, I’m a foster home for amps and a match maker for players and tones.

BTW, it took me a while to get my 100H dialed in with decent tones. What I found was that the tone stack seems to take away more than add to when you turn the dials. Don't be afraid to dime everything and work backwards if you are not finding great tones in it. I can dial it in one way and tone sounds towards a modern JCM800 and another way towards a Plexi-like tone, especially with a LP with Classic 57's or other PAF style PU's.
Care to share any of your settings?

You know, just in case one finds himself at one's local GC, trying out said amplifier, because one needs an amp . . .

Yeah, no problem! I just got home from an appointment, but I'll get it posted up today.

Still up in the air with the HR. I’ll post all the minutiae for anyone who’s still curious tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I now also have an H. Things are getting out of hand considering I’m “not a Marshall guy.”

Everyone's a Marshall guy. It just depends whether they've realised it yet or not. You're in a great place, some people go their whole lives and don't see the light.

So what had happened? Keeping it, or 3rd times the charm on a return?

More importantly, have you had GAMANDA shitcanned yet for crimes against humanity?
OK, circling back around (with apologies since I'll probably post about 5 times in a row...) Again, this is minutiae - look away if that's not your bag.

I loved the 2nd HR they sent, just like I loved the 1st one, but I never would have shaken the sense that something was off with the PT. I had to leave town on vacation the day after it arrived and I just didn't have time to screw around with it. And plans to visit Atomic were certain to confuse things even further.

Arrived at Atomic, found the 100H, and it sounded very similar to the HR overall. If anything the H is a little smoother and darker and easier to dial, while the HR is a bit more versatile and therefore a bit fussier. Maybe? (More on this in another post.) I didn't buy anything on my first visit, but as the vacation neared an end, I mentioned to my wife that there wouldn't be time to go back, and she insisted I call to see what they'd do on price, and then repeatedly insisted I go buy the thing, even though we didn't have room in the car for it, and even though I was hoping to be halfway to NY by the time Atomic opened. :D It was like a weird "duck season wabbit season" scenario where I was somehow arguing against buying myself an amp. So I bought it LOL.

Atomic were extremely easy to work with. I called and asked if there was any wiggle room on the price, and the guy said, "Always." Then he ran around the store looking for the amp and couldn't find it. (Sounded like he was going to have a heart attack LOL.) Told me he'd look into it and get back, which he did 10 minutes later. I offered $500, and he said "Sure". Went the next morning, stuck all the luggage in my kid's lap ;) and wedged the amp in the trunk.

I was really worried it would have the same transformer buzz once I got it into a quieter space, but it's powered up right now and dead silent. There's definitely something not right with two HRs I've tried.

So now I have to decide whether it's worth trying a 3rd time to "upgrade" to the HR, or whether to just get my money back. I do think the HR has a wider variety of voicings, and better means of accessing those voicings (between MIDI control and the Lead 1/Lead 2 and Clean/Crunch switches being more effective.) But that would leave me having to sell the H... and I hate selling stuff. (The nice thing is I'm not in all that deep even having purchased both amps, and now I have the H to hold me over if I have to go without the HR for a while.)

As for GAMANDA, FedEx sent me a survey asking how they could "serve me better", probably in response to my 1 star review. I mean, FFS, begin with delivering shit before you report its having been delivered, delivering it to the right town, and not drop kicking it off the back of a truck when you do.

:cuss

I can't see how you missed it  :rofl

Good luck on your return visit!
If I'd seen this the first time I walked in, I probably would have played a bunch of head games with myself about what I'd sell and what I'd return, then checked what Atomic could do on the price... and then brought this home instead of the Marshall LOL.

(But with 20/20 hindsight I'm actually very happy with the Marshall. It's a bargain.)

Man; I'd send the HR packing. You got "versatility" in modeling. If you like the sound sounds on tap on the dead quiet DSLH; I'd 1000% stick with it.

I have questions for you regarding the Lead 1/ Lead2 and Clean/ Crunch switches. These modes overlap a lot more than on the HR (if I'm not mistaken; I have to plug the HR in again and double-check.) In your experience, do Lead 1 and Lead 2 overlap almost completely unless the Gain is set very low? And conversely, do Clean 1 and Clean 2 sound almost identical (apart from attenuation) unless the Gain is set very high?

Again, I have to double-check, but I feel like the HR does a better job of presenting two distinct voices on each of these channels. Just want to make sure my H is working properly.

I mean, of course tons of the recorded music I love was played through Marshalls. I'd just never plugged into a Marshall myself and loved it. And from all I'd read, the only way to make a Marshall sound great was to put the right pedals in front, which... I mean I can make almost any amp sound great with the right pedals in front.

Ironic that I had to play two of the cheapest amps Marshall makes in order to see the light. :D

You're right. And realistically, for $500, I'll probably keep the H no matter what happens with the HR. "Backup."

Don't tell my wife.

Actually, you can tell my wife; she doesn't seem to give AF. :rofl

The solution is to get a DSL100H. It’s the better built model.
So now that I've got both these amps at my disposal, can you elaborate a little bit as to what you mean by "better built"? Trying to weigh the bird in hand (H) vs. the next who-knows-how-many birds in the bush (HR). The HR's got observable QC issues, but is there other corner-cutting you're aware of?

In stock form, the Red Lead channel is very bright and has a lot more gain than the Green Crunch channel. If they sound very similar, then the prior owner probably clipped the C19 cap on it like I did. Now my Red sounds very similar to my Green, so I dial in the crunch on the Green where I like it and then increase the volume and gain on the red to make it a "Hotter" version of the Green Crunch.

I don't play much lead, but that is the idea behind mine, go to the Red when it's lead time or changing to a higher gain crunch.

Check the C19 Cap on the board and see if it has been removed or one leg is clipped. Here is my post in Do It Yourself section:

This is the original mod I did where I replaced the 470uF Cap with 200uF. I have sense removed it completely.

The tube sockets are mounted to the chassis in the H. In the JCM 2000 and new HR, they are mounted to the PCB. There are a few other things, but that is the main one. JCM2000 had bias drift issues too.

I think the PCB's in the H are thicker as well

I might be a little turned around here... I'm not comparing the channels to one another. (These sound quite different.) I'm comparing one mode to the other mode on each of the channels.

So, Red (Ultra Gain) Lead 1 vs. Red Lead 2: these sound almost identical unless the Gain is set very low. Otherwise, they both compress like mad and sound (great but) very similar. (Lots of overlap: meaning, easy to get most Lead 2 sounds by goosing the Gain in Lead 1.)

Green (Classic Gain) Clean vs. Green Crunch: these sound almost identical unless the Gain is set very high. At lower gains they're both clean, as you'd expect, with Clean being just a bit lower in volume than Crunch.

Is this the expected behavior?
