Fuzz Faces are certainly great, but they’re on a differently planet when combined with the dirt from something else! Whether that’s amp dirt or a specific pedal-




(That says 50-watt Plexi but I’m not seeing the blue light on the Suhr light up as I play, it’s most certainly the Fractal 100 Watt Plexi Jumped)

It'll be broadly similar to FF into a Klon. It'll tighten up the bottom end, smooth some of the ragged top and push mids into the amp. It'll help shape a FF and xit through rather than a big wall of sound.

I'm not saying I'd use it all the time but I get why someone would do it.

Thanks. I’ll likely just keep the ED due to no one really being interested in them aside from people who already have ED’s!

I haven’t actually turned that on since I got the 50-watt Plexi, I need to run that through the Fryette and see how well it does in that setup.

Granted, it’s EJ’s Fuzz Face into EJ’s Tube Screamer into EJ’s Dumble, that clip from Total Electric Guitar displays exactly that- he switches to the dirty rhythm and you hear the dirt kick on right before he steps on the Fuzz Face.

It still does and I actually moved the cap to the other side of the pot and just extended the bottom cap leg to the same leg of the pot.

I would have loved to have just bent the cap to cover the bottom of the pot, but the maker of this harness, meant to go in a Strat and would most certainly *never* go into anything other than a Strat pickguard……used long-shaft pots so to counter the height above the pickguard I had to add some nuts to the shafts, leaving just a smidgeon of space for the wiring to run under the pots. It took me 10 minutes to get the pickguard flush when I finally did dry mount it properly….everything worked when I tested it with a screwdriver, then once I tightened the pickguard screws I had the short.

Turning both tone knobs to 0 also completely kills the output.

I won’t be surprised if I open it up and see the output wires likely disconnected the neck pickup and are causing the short somewhere along that capacitor.

Bummer!

Hope you get it sorted. Not fun spending time chasing a problem that was supposed to
be a solution, though, is it?

I may end up going the pre-built/drop-in route. These eyes are not what they used to be.
I am going to have to get some of those funky jeweler's glasses here shortly.

I dunno what it is, it’s gotta be some mental thing at this point, but the second I bring a solder iron near pickup wires, everything is magnetized by some invisible force that makes every wire try to jump on the soldering iron.

I’ve had zero issue dropping $110-$130 on solderless kits just to avoid it!

Couldn't agree more. Despite being a guitarist and more than once hearing other folks say I have "gifted hands" (I'll spare the details ), when it comes to soldering I feel like I'm back in kindergarten throwing tantrums.

Probably a combination of my ADHD and lack of patience.

A buddy of mine had similar experience with soldering, and we joked about it until he got himself a halfway decent soldering station (temperature regulation, digital display, various tip sizes, etc). He's pretty good it these days and says the purchase was a game changer.

Anyhow, my partner says I shouldn't buy a soldering station, since she's sure it wouldn't change anything and I'd end up frustrated anyway. She's got a point, I guess.

I never realized until recently how similar EJ and Yngwie are on the Pickup front, and yet get some
seriously differrent results.

Kind of proves it is about the useage and intent, and less about the gear than maybe we like to think.

Yeah, very similar concepts!

Less glassy, flatter, cleaner, more mids, and a bit less “character” than vintage Strat pickups.

Makes them perhaps not quite as good at those vintage Strat clean tone things, but also makes them way more versatile and better sounding with gain.

I think the EJ signature sets are maybe a notch or two closer to traditional Strat pickups than the DiMarzio HS

It does exactly what you think it'd do.
I even used to do it with a Tweak fuzz into a TS9.

all have that guy where you love his playing, and appreciate his person, but end up thinking you
overdid it on the Fish Sauce Eric, when we listen.

That's probably why I learned so much on this thread about EJ's signal path and approach..... outside
of the Echoplex.... I didn't know a ton about his setup..... as it was not a "tone" I ever felt inclined
to chase. Super duper love the guy, though.

New Dover showed up last night, but I came home to my studio full of dogshit and piss after getting maybe 8 hours of sleep in 72 hours. I passed out after getting home from the dog park at 6:30 and almost got a full 12 hours of sleep in. Feeling great today!

Yeah, in the realm of Strat pickups I suppose they could be considered “dark and dull”, compared to the bright scooped glassy vintage stuff. But they’re infinitely more versatile! And still sound great

I’ve never chased EJ’s tone. I ended up with my EJ Strat because I went Strat shopping, played about 30 Strats at a few different shops, and the EJ was the clear winner. IMO it’s the best standard production Strat you can buy. Everything about it from the neck, to the finish, to the electronics was

It's definitely a FF into a Zendrive, the voice and gain settings are preset in the zendrive part of the circuit. I was looking at the circuit because I'm thinking about building one.

I'd noticed that a while back when I started falling down the EJ rabbit hole again. Between that and the EJ FF->TS discussion, it makes me wonder what stacking a Fuzz Face into a Bluesbreaker would sound like, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

(It also makes me wonder why the Lovepedal ad copy about the Dover Drive goes on and on about being inspired by the Tube Driver, because as far as the circuit goes, it ain't.)
