Perhaps this can be viewed as a topic that's primarily interesting for people who are just starting to learn more about guitar tones but I personally think it's an important topic, especially for high-gain tones. What do the terms "loose" and "tight" really mean and why do people boost their high-gain amps? Should you use a boost at all?
I tried to cover those topics in this video with some sound tests and comparisons:
The tight amp of choice is my ENGL Special Edition Founders Edition, an excellent amp with great modern high-gain tones. My loose amp of choice is my Mesa Dual Rectifier 3-Ch. I love that amp and the looseness is part of its charm imho. Also a cool amp with a very outspoken character. What sort of tones do you like and why? Do you always use a boost or do you try to avoid them to retain the character of the amp?
