Looking at a Sliver Sky core

Found a 2020 with maple neck for a good price. Just looking for folks' opinions here who have played or owned one and their thoughts/opinions. Hard to try one around where I live. Thank you

There's a clear difference in the two, when comparing back to back. Nitro vs. poly, hardware. But that being said, I much prefer and enjoy the SE, due to the radius and overall neck feel. It sounds pretty damn good stock as well, but it'd be a really fun mod platform too.

So far I have refreted a couple and re radiused them to 10” they over bevelled the fret ends too.
Even though they are well made and good sounding I would not play one. The whole visual thing and the John Mayer connection. You might as well just write “Twat” across your face.

Thanks for that lol. What do you think of the SEs?

I love mine. It's the perfect Strat. The Strat tones I've been searching for for 20 years. If you're after those 1963/64 Strat tones, it has them in spades.

I was worried about the radius thing but I find it quite comfortable for the style of music I play (jamband stuff, lots of Grateful Dead in our setlists).

The pickups are really want make it IMHO. So if you're scared of the radius the SE is definitely worth a look.

As for the twat thing, I mean...you probably shouldn't worry what semi-anonymous balding guitar techs chasing exact replicas of their dead guitar hero's guitars have to saw when it comes to writing twat across your face. Just play what moves you.

(Edit: @Eagle hopefully knows I'm jabbing him in good fun...the man is a font of knowledge and shares it freely and I appreciate him for that. Even if he thinks I'm a twat.)

I haven't played the core, but I am a massive fan of USA PRS

I had a fender american Pro II strat that was amazing, but I'm not much of a strat player so I sold it and bought an SE silver sky to tick the strat box still. It was a very nice guitar, definitely not as nice as the am. pro, but was close enough for my needs. Frets did start sprouting from the edges and were sharp after about 6 months. I've never had that happen after the fact on a guitar before but @Eagle indicated that thats usually do to a shorter wood drying process from the factory and once filed shouldn't be a problem anymore

Scarf joint between the neck and headstock looked visually slightly wonky too but it was structurally sound

Cool guitar, but I ended up selling it after about 6 months. I've never sold any of my USA PRS, and doubt I will (famous last words)

If any of that "not directly related to your question but kinda" is any help

Disclaimer - big JM fan. Take the following with several grains of salt!

I love the look of PRS guitars, but I have a hard time jiving with their neck shapes. My Tim Mahoney makes my hand cramp up after 10 minutes of playing. To me the Silver Sky has the most comfortable neck of any PRS I've played. After catching the end of the 2023 Dead and Company tour, & about 6 months before Paul introduced the Dead Spec, I grabbed a moc sand SS for myself. I honestly don't notice the tight radius, and have no trouble with big bends up and down the fretboard, but I've had a few vintage radius guitars so maybe that's why I don't mind it. The pickups are also sweet, not a bad tone in there, can cut without getting ice picky. My other Strats have been gathering dust since I got mine. I doubled down on the Mayer / Alligator vibe, took a core SS and modded to add the Alembic blaster, brass nut, and string retainer. Eventually went back to the original nut, its easily one of my favorite guitars.

I only had a Silver Sky SE here for 1 day (a mate was selling it and I was considering to buy it) and it's possibly been the most enjoyable Strat I ever had in my hands. Didn't however like the single coil noise and the non-locking tuners and didn't feel like modifying it all that much, so I resisted. I might buy one some day, though, possibly just for home noodling and recording duties.

And I never got the John Mayer hate (even if there's some sort of "comical" aspects to him, still a great and very groovy player).

That's hot. I tried to scoop the limited edition run when they announced them but they were gone gone gone so fast.

Lots of closeted JM fans out there, dude. I think the only thing "missing" from mine is the brass nut, which was a little too pingy / clangy for me, and that beautiful sunken-into-the-grain paint job. Regardless, its a killer guitar and my favorite PRS out there. If I was purging my collection down to 5 guitars, this would still be in my collection.

This is great. Thank you
What year is yours?

I'll tell you what he thinks - something along the lines of - 'it doesn't even compare. PRS Core SS is on ANOTHER level. If you can't hear the difference, you've just got unrefined ears. blah blah'.

I've had my share of expensive guitars over the years - I'll say the SS SE is an EXCELLENT guitar. I don't give two hoots about poplar vs alder or poly vs nitro anymore. (but I care very much about weight!)

I don't really care for JM at all - but this is a great guitar. The neck is excellent - finally something with some meat to the shoulders (and I've got smaller hands!) Also, the smaller radius works great (my EBMM Axis has a constant 10" radius and that's an awesome neck too)! The pickups are very nice - missing some of the extra high-end (harshness?) from some Fender bridge PUPs....but very nice in its own way.

Overall, for the money (and even otherwise), this is a great guitar (minus the kinda ugly headstock)
