Old Fenders didn’t all get built to the same schematic or have the same speakers, and that is on top of the wide parts tolerances when they were new! So I guess they were approximately 183% the same. Give or take.

Their guitar player is really good too - a rare example of a rock player who doesn't hide behind overdrives, let alone distortion.

Well, seriously, I think this is as much of a myth as the good old "Boss sounds like a cocked wah" thing (which in Boss' case seems to be largely related to their internal cabs).
Yes, there's a series of amps that may sound rather same-ish in the earlier FW revisions and IMO the factory defaults enhanced that quite a bit.
But it got a lot better from maybe 3.0 onward. And IMO the selection right now is pretty great and you can coax pretty much any sound out of them.
Are they as accurate as those from others? Maybe not. But personally, I couldn't care less.
Is there room for improvements? Very likely - but, again personally, some amps really don't leave much to be desired for me. Not all, obviously.
And well, I certainly can't spot much of a "typical Helix sound" quality.
