Line 6 Helix Stadium Pre-Launch Discussion

According to the manual CC1 is assigned to emulate exp 1. Mod wheels send CC1. So not a bug unless it's responding to messages from the wrong channel.

Which reminds me that I think there's a bug in the HX ONE. It seems to actually respond to CC1 from any channel despite the channel setting. So if I have it hooked up via MIDI and I move the mod wheel on my keyboard, I get an ultra rapid fire bypass. Haven't tested more, because it's the only device that will respond to the wrong CC1.

Yeah. I figured that out. Seems weird to me, but I changed the MIDI channel on the Stadium, and all is good there. But I can't figure out how to change the listening channel on the GM-800 or change the CC the modulation wheel is sending, so it's changing the volume and other settings on the GM-800 that I don't want.

I guess I never used the modulation wheel on my previous keyboard.

Mod wheel is CC1 in the MIDI standard. Some keyboards do allow you to change it, but probably not all. Modulation assignments are usually made on the receiving end, so check the GM-800 manual. I would imagine it's pretty flexible.

My HX One bug turned out to be a bug in another device after extensive testing :bonk

The Boss manual is, to be frank, absolute crap. But I'll see what I can figure out.

I thought I had figured out the EXP 1 issue by changing a MIDI channel last night, but today it's back to reacting to the mod wheel.

I bought a MIDI Events Processor to automate switching the note source on the GM-800 between the GK pickup and MIDI. I think I'll see if I can program a simple CC 1 to CC 16 swap into that. I think that should take care of the issue.

Do you actually need the Stadium to receive MIDI?

I run the keyboard MIDI Out into the Stadium In, then the Stadium Out/Thru to the GM-800. That way I can use Command Center to change presets and the note source on the GM-800.

Also, I'm wondering if there's a way to use the Akai's X-Y controller to control the Helix X-Y function, but I haven't even begun to look into that.

Well, that didn't work. Sigh.

Note to self: Keep reading the thread before you waste 15 minutes trying to repro a "bug." :rofl
I still don't understand why it seems to only affect the HX One  I managed to trace it to the latest fw version in my sequencer (Oxi One mkII) after pulling my setup apart. Having the relay switch a hundred times a second does sound really cool :rofl

Wouldn't that still work in case you set MIDI RX to off? Never tested it myself but MIDI Thru might still be working (and MIDI out would work anyway).

He's still active on TOP.
Proof positive I never go there anymore. Although I have been curious to check the temperature on the Stadium's reception over there, since it's been more tepid than I expected here. I remember "THE Helix Thread" on TOP being a daily avalanche in the weeks and months (and years) after launch. Not sure how much of the difference is a reflection of the products, and how much is just TGF having fewer members than TOP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This forum has a large and disproportionate contingent of Fractal and Mesa fans. Meanwhile, I think the number of TOP posters who actually play guitar and are not stone deaf has been dwindling. Every now and then I go over there and check the first 4-5 pages of new posts, and more than half the active threads are off topic and a majority of the rest are some of the dumbest questions imaginable.

Pickles in glass houses, if I may mix my metaphors? ;)

I just went and looked. There is a thread on CD case preferences, are plastic case pedals bad, Is popularity the only meaningful measure of good music. That was on the first page. Good grief!

The other trick is that Line 6 doesn't have a Cliff Chase. We don't have someone who can seemingly do anything at the drop of a hat. If we want to do Proxy and an all new looping engine, we can't do them at the same time because the same engineers who are experts at LSTM, GRU, and Wavenet are also the in-house experts at building cool new looping capabilities. So one of those things simply has to wait until the other is finished.
I've said for years that when Line6 put out a product that is full featured/sized but without an expression pedal I'd buy it. I did indeed pre-order a Stadium. This is the one thing that gives me misgivings and has me considering pausing my Stadium order until I see how things shake out. As I've said in other threads, my issue with a modeling product going into capture as well is that brain power and other resources are finite. I don't want to have the modeling side, effects, and so on slow down or lack in features in order to provide capture. I worry this could be a formula for frustration.

And I can't possibly know until probably a year or more after the product releases. So I'm mulling.
