Just bought a Fryette LX. Thanks Whizz!

This is honestly one of my biggest concerns with tube gear moving forward. It’s all old repair guys, not to be ageist.

Now that I have a great amp guy I’ve been cycling my entire collection of amps through his hands while I can. Might be the last 20-30 years I get with these amps.
I don’t know an amp tech under 60 that has a clue.

About 15 years ago I had bought a Peavey tube amp on ebay and the power section was buzzing. Everything I read online was that it needed new filter caps, even though the amp was about ten years old.

I took it to some hipster late-20 early 30 that was operating out of the back of an inner city studio. He plugged it in and said "this is normal, its a high gain amp, they all do this". I was out the $75 bench fee.

Not to be deterred, I called peavey and ordered all the filter caps. I did the work myself and the amp was whisper quiet.

That amp "tech" was an absolute clown. If he can't diagnose and replace filter caps, wth was he doing in business as an amp tech??

It blows my mind how people can set up shop doing something and have no idea what they are doing.

That’s a pretty representative experience of today’s amp techs .

The offshoot of this is that I learned how to do filter caps. Peavey helped me choose the parts, but I'm pretty sure if I have to do it again on another amp I have the confidence to buy the parts from mouser or wherever.

So even though he ripped me off the bench fee, I learned a valuable skill.

I think it really depends where you live. Some of the best techs in the Nashville area are under 60. Yep Nashville is a place where there is a high demand for that stuff. Now in rural areas where I live finding one under 60 is next to impossible. I’m glad I live near enough it’s not a pain to go to a place like Nashville. Still I think there will be people who can do this stuff. As long as there is a demand for that type of work and same can make good money doing it then yeah they’ll be around. Whether they are good or not is the question and in my experience I’ve had bad experiences with techs of all ages.
