Is There Anything About Playing Guitar You Dislike, Or Even Hate?

Changing strings (and subsequently cleaning up, fixing any issues) can be a real chore with enough guitars. I was just thinking I should try to change all of them by doing one guitar a day.

I wish I knew music theory better but at the same time have a hard time committing myself to learning more music theory. It's boring!

For playing, can't really think of anything.

Playing guitar specifically, I don't think so. I enjoy it quite a bit.

I will say I miss playing with a band and playing live. I was almost always a drummer in bands but I've been wanting to get back into that for years now. Just haven't gotten over the "not good enough" and "seems like a lot of work" humps.

The other stuff that comes along with guitar can be annoying/frustrating:
G.A.S. and having so much stuff sitting around
The "what if" of better gear (feeds into G.A.S.)
Strings going dead and needing replacement
Cables getting tangled up everywhere

Let me recommend Signals Music Studio. Jake makes it quite interesting, teaches it within context, and he gets right to the point. His is definitely the channel I'd go to if I wanted to learn more theory.

For the guys who don't like changing strings and don't change them till they break, do you not have tuning issues with your guitars? I find if I don't change them in time I get all sorts of tuning and intonation problems playing a guitar with dead strings.

Nope. The only thing I get with dead-ish strings, is the non-wound strings start to develop weird over tones. Maybe my "dead" isn't as bad as some.

I mean, I don't go so long as when you play, for example, an open E chord, it has no life to it.

With locking tuners I don't find changing strings too annoying (definitely don't miss using standard tuners), but I hate that I need to change them.
I love the bite of fresh strings and get bummed out when using really dead sounding strings. :wat

Other than that, I really hate the days where everything you play sounds like crap! Nothing in my setup has changed other than my own stupid body and there's nothing I can do about it. Those days where I pick it up for ten minutes and then just say "fuck it!"

For me it is without a doubt, changing strings. I'll put it off as long as possible, until I either run out of high e singles, or the warbling overtones are driving me crazy. Dead strings? Not enough of a reason. :rofl

A distant 2nd is messing with tones.

I dislike playing solos. Always have and always will. I can do it, I just don't enjoy it. The height of my soloing ability was probably working up the Bark at The Moon solos pretty much note for note. Every single solo I have ever played was done out of necessity. Now that the band I am in has a true lead player, it's awesome. I still take a couple but it's mostly cos they fit my style better than his.

The dry spells where there's no inspiration/motivation. I'll never have a single complaint about anything related to playing music again once this passes. What's weird is that when I DO actually get in the studio, I'm still creative and get a lot of work done, but just wanting to pick up the guitar is like pulling teeth.

1. Injuries.

I have a disability in the middle finger that limits some chords and other things.

Currently, my index finger is recovering from a deep fillet like cut and I’m playing with the remaining 3 fingers.

Although it’s fine in a way as it stops the noodling and I can focus on practising drop chords and progressions.

2. Fighting rigidity that comes with age

Unlike a younger brain, we get stuck in the patterns and muscle memory. I hate that.

3. The initial tweaking with the Helix, lol.

Also, I’m scared of poking my fingers when changing strings (no locking tuners). But I don’t change them for years..

a little off subject, but I like those D'addario half wound strings. They have that kinda worn in sound and last a long time. Stay in tune better, ime.

I've not tried any new strings since I started use regular D'addarios god knows how many years ago. It's a rabbit hole I don't think I want to go into tbh. I use the same 11-52 set on everything and change them all at least once every four weeks.
