IK Multimedia TONEX

Yeah, I do all demoing, tweaking, etc... using the program on the computer. I don't mess with the pedal until I am ready to just dump the sound on there. Easier workflow

Absolutely this.

Fwiw, as there's been a new FW for the Tonex pedals, I decided to update the least important one for a start (3 TXOs in my possession, yeah well...) and checked with the Tonex One Controller - still working!

I just saw this update. They improved the accuracy of the Modeler. Doh, I just made a hundred or so captures, lol.

I am having issues with the new training. Hopefully they fix soon.

But you can always retrain the files if you didn't delete them.

That is interesting. I have never looked into how to do that. I have never deleted them, other than removing them from the list when they finalize.

I haven't tried it yet since I updated it today.

Just saw that the new Dumble themed pedal comes with exclusive tone models that you only get if you buy one of the limited (1000 units) pedals.

Full on collecting pokémon mode now.
I read that there's an improvement to the amp-only profiling; have you tried it yet?

Not yet. I reported a bug I was having with ToneX last week where I was unable to train signals and didn’t even get a response after 7+ days.

I’ll give the update a go for sure. It seems like there’s been an update, and maybe this bug is sorted.

The new ToneX update seems to work well on my system. No issues this far and the UI seems to have been improved. But I have expressed my displeasure with the marketing of the new Overdrive on another popular guitar forum. I will not bother to share there to spare redundancy. Hope Peter can chime in there.

What issues are you having.

Tonight I tried to retrain some of the models I have made. I did a few, and I can tell they have a little more bass and a little more treble, so the mids seem less. However, several of them I had to do multiple times because I was getting broken captures. I had to redo one about 4 times.

I am thinking this update has some bugs.

My issues are more extreme than eq. Working with support.

When I got the broken captures, it was all broken up, crackly, low volume, and whistled in the background. Kind of like a fuzz pedal with a dead battery. I kept doing them over and over. For now I am going to leave the modeler alone because it has issues.

To be fair I was talking about a standalone editor. Note that AmpliTube 5 has been integrated as an editor directly since they were released. You can move presets back and forth with the virtual versions inside AmpliTube 5 as well as manage the presets on your X-GEAR pedal (re-order etc) right in there.
Since it appears that the X-Gear pedals are being discontinued, is there any chance you'll open up the spec so that some enterprising programmer might be able to write the missing editor?

Okay running the Tonex now in the analog loop of the Fender TMP which doesn't run through any A/D or D/A conversion. Still getting some noise when plugged into USB, but I'm getting some really horrific noise as well just standalone. I'm also finding a lot of high gain profiles were giving really nasty feedback. Swapped back to running the Tonex direct into the interface and the feedback issue is resolved, but the crazy high noise is still there.

So here's my findings after several days:
  • Noise level is unacceptably high, probably 10-15 dB higher than any modeler I've tried
  • Separate USB ground loop noise is introduced with some devices which is also unacceptable given you need to be connected to a computer to browse captures
  • Software is more usable but still extremely clunky with difficult to read text on a high resolution monitor
  • Tonex captures to my ears don't sound better than my amp modelers and in most cases sound worse
  • Tonex captures don't have the same sonic issues as Kemper V1 profiles (chopped off lows/highs, mid boost); don't have a Kemper anymore to try V2
Unit will be returned this week.

Quite weird - and I'm aware that others have reported similar issues with the Tonex Ones. Yet, as weird as it might be, with both of my setups (Tonex Ones nested in GT-1000 loops), I'm getting what's possibly the lowest noise setups ever (apart from all-in-one modeling setups staying completely within the digital domain). I'm sure it's got to do a lot with the (pretty excellent) ground lifting options of the GTs and the HB PSUs I'm using (which are playing in a league way above their price). But then, yes, I noticed some noise issues when using the TXOs on their own in some combinations.

It's not bad on lower gain captures but anything higher gain is insanely high noise level. Never had anywhere close to that kind of noise problem with Kemper or Quad Cortex captures.

If you point me to any capture on ToneNET, I could just give it a try.

Fwiw, it's highly recommended to lower the input gain on the device. I know it's happening in the digital domain, but plenty of 3rd party captures are pretty much over-gained IMO (and I'm not alone with that opinion). My input gain is at 0dB, default is +8, IIRC.
