IK Multimedia TONEX

Really curious about whether I'm actually running into clipping with my current setups (won't be able to tell before the 1st (xmas family travel)).

One thing is certain: thoughtful gain staging is very important with TONEX—both in the physical chain and within TONEX (i.e., calibration of captures).

I've adjusted my Tonex channel preset so captures receive the same levels in both the hardware and the plugin. Unfortunately, quite some captures are made with higher input levels in mind (especially IK's own), so there's always some kinda guesswork - or rather: trial and error - involved. But I seem to be getting along fine. Defenitely helps that I don't give a damn about authenticity.

I also set things up so I hit the capture the same way in both the plugin and the hardware, but I DO care about authenticity, so I aim for a level informed by the level used when the capture was made.

So I spent quite some time googling about the topic. Some say helix clips in a similar way. And one audio interface after another clip, even with their pads way down (the way described). It's an epidemic that I thought had been resolved long ago. Apparently not.

Tried with my Motu M2 and the stock pickups of the PRS DGT SE. With the trimpot all the way down, when I slam the bridge pickup (which I even screwed down a little bit), the max peak is around -6dB. So, given that there's quite some hotter pickups and also given that people don't want to give up whatever habits of boosting things with analog pedals, I can absolutely imagine situations where the M2 wouldn't be sufficient anymore.

Fwiw, I remember trying to clip the HX (Floor and Stomp) inputs, and IIRC, I had to hit them a lot harder to get there.

Will check with the TXO when back home.

Nice! I’m still coming back to your recto captures from time to time so loooking forward to anything else you’re cooking.

On the other hand I have now deregistered and will sell my Tonex One pedal. Like I mentioned before I’ve had a lot of fun setting up a waveshare zero and BT footswitch to control it. But when I reflected over Christmas break on what I’ve spent my time on I realized this stuff had turned into a distraction from actually playing guitar in the limited time I have available. I’ve also gotten rid of my HX Stomp for the same reasons. Instead I’ve set up a MainStage file now for easy switching between three channels and my Tonex/NAM adventures will continue there instead. Hopefully I’ll settle on some combos of captures and FX and be content…

Mind that I’m a bedroom player so I really don’t need much dedicated HW, and I’m not dissing the TO or HX Stomp in any way. Or wait, maybe the TO for being noisy and weird with levels, haha.

Holy crap that is a huge ETA, lol. It takes me about 8 minutes to complete 1 capture.

I did about 15 captures this weekend of some of my Synergy modules. I am really happy with how they are sounding through IRs on the computer.

M1 Mac and Tonex do not play super nice. I think Apple silicon in general struggles with Tonex.

Apple seems to struggle with everything, lol :rofl

Sorry, not a fan. I got a new PC last year with a 5070 GPU, so it goes through captures pretty quickly. I will run about 6-8 of them, and then start the queue, go do something, come back in 30-40 min and they are done. However, I couldn't even capture at all until V2, because the old modeler didn't support newer GPUs.

They really don’t struggle at all, with most apps.

I don't know, but hope all is good.

There was a lot of tension building between a few people, amidst a conversation about ''IRs'' the other day.

I figured something happened and I missed it, or he just left for other reasons?
