IK Multimedia TONEX

Hello gear geeks. I just joined the ToneX dysfunctional family yesterday, and weird and kludgey as the IK software is (as expected) found it easy enough to spend yet a little more and get the Satriani package , which includes a lovely handwired Princeton that I instinctively knew I had to dig up my YorkAudioView attachment 46022 cab collection and see if I could figure out how to import a few of ….easy peasy, and the result , when paired with my VP 4 and the this Zappa inspired fuzz , I’m getting some otherworldly tones outta this sucker .
Very cool pairing there!

Actually, if using the hardware with the new editor it's pretty straight forward now, and I'm getting great results using a lowly ToneX One in my FX3's FX Loop (along with a variety of analog pedals, and I just use DI'd amp or power amp captures and some reverb/room tone from the ToneX One, while everything else is done in the Fractal-verse).

+1 for the VP4, i recetly got it and its just amazing with the Tonex pedal, best of both worlds.

I'll raise that with a FM3 and ToneX One, a great way to add a small/light second Amp Block to the FM3. In my case I use DI Captures with the FM3's Cab Block (two IR's with LPF/HPF, mixing and phasing, preamp and EQ, room sim etc...), so the Tonex One supplies up to two foot switchable great sounding amp/tube power amp captures along with some room/reverb.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is that? I have the sig collection and Brown Sound pack. Always interested in more that might be useful!

Which reminds me, I really like the baked in Virtual IR’s in the Editor (reminds me of a similar ability in the Solid Studio MKII). Are there any expansion packs for these available? If not, that would be a killer addition for IK to offer IMO. @IK Multimedia
I've told the devs/PMs/etc that VIR is an overlooked opportunity for expansion, but what do I know - I've also crowed about adding more MODO Bass and MODO Drum expansions. I don't think those folks visit here so I can gripe about it, or maybe I'll get an email shortly from them :) I'll bump the VIR expansion idea though, for sure.
I mean, in terms of what I’ve found, yeah. That goes back to the issue of finding good captures. I looked through a ton of SLO and JCM800 caps, didn’t find any I really liked. So I did captures myself, of my SLO and JCM800 patches.
The mention of your SLO reminds me that we have the last SLO-100 that Mike built in our US HQ, and we should do something more with that.

This is a little long, but in the interest of transparency I thought it was best to go into detail-

In absence of my review (and partially to hold me accountable to getting it done) I’m going to detail my interaction with @IK Multimedia as I feel Pete deserves some props that I shouldn’t have waited so long to get to.

I hadn’t paid attention to any updates ToneX had been getting since launch, so when Andy Wood went on his rant on his livestream, I assumed not much had changed. I posted it here while also posting in the livestream comments something along the lines of “If we had Spicy Andy at TheGearForum we could have ran IK off even faster”, referencing the launch of ToneX when Pete went into lurk mode due to some of the hostility here (and I’ve also been trying to get Andy here since we opened).
(Note- Andy’s issue was directly related to his particular setup and needing to utilize ToneX with OBS/loopback for live-streaming)

One of my goals for this forum is to keep an open dialogue with companies to better serve both us as players and the companies, as other forums will just delete/ban anything negative at times. That comment was speaking out of both sides of my mouth, because it essentially goes against my goal of an open dialogue/progress, while my intent behind it was more “Andy’s name carries some weight and may have lead to progress at a time we were going in the opposite direction”, my sarcasm doesn’t always land.

Pete and I began speaking via DM after that and with some clarification on my end, I believe he realized that I do actually want to see gear get better and not to serve as a punching bag (there’s another company for that :grin) I had mentioned that once I free up some funds I had every intention of getting Satch’s Amp Vault because I was dying to hear those Dragon captures. And this is where Pete put IK’s money where their mouth is and magnanimously sent me a code for the Satch Amp Vault, an indirect statement of “If you think our stuff sucks so much, here, try it for yourself”

As I loaded the software, I wrote a little timeline of everything I experienced that I’ll put in the review later, but the tl;dr is that while I had several issues, not a single one of them were the result of ToneX not functioning properly or needing anything ‘special’ to work. And then I had a fucking blast trying out those caps.

I want to make it very clear that at no point did Pete ask me for a review or even hint at me saying anything about the experience publicly. And more than that, he’d also like to extend the invitation to try out a capture pack for some of our members who may still have doubts about ToneX or the software. I didn’t want to make a contest or anything out of this, so I’m going to rely a bit on the honor system here in regard to getting these caps in member’s hands.

There’s 2 groups I want to see get these capture packs; those who are interested but are still in doubt and those who absolutely love it already and just want more caps. If you’re not going to use it or you actually don’t care about it but just want to say you tried it so you can dismiss it on a forum, I’d prefer not to get them in your hands so they can go to people with a legit interest/use.

I need @IK Multimedia to confirm, but I believe the Metal Gems pack is up for grabs first. The pack includes caps of a 5150, Uberschall, a Herbert and an SLO. Definitely in a tone territory where ToneX will be put to the test!

Skimming older pages in this thread to see some speculators, I’m curious if @laxu, @Sascha Franck, @Enchilada Jones and/or @norminal would be interested in giving them a spin? You need the software, but I believe CS is free now. I know Sascha isn’t a metal guy, so maybe you’d prefer to wait for something with less gain. With Laxu being the UI guy, I figured that’d be the deep end of the pool to see how the software swims currently.

Or, if I didn’t name you, you’re a metal guy and really love ToneX or you’re on the fence, let me know!

I have the full TONEX Max. I’ve auditioned both the Satch and Brown Sound collection, but as previously mentioned, I was presented with white noise bursts immediately due to the way I clicked on the collection. I found it very distracting and ended up just closing the app.

I’d definitely be interested in checking out the Metal Gems collection.

I didn't know you had Tonex Drew. Shows how much I pay attention. :facepalm

Maybe just the plugin?

Anyhow:

I own ToneX Max as well. But I think I have by now opened it once. I should indeed give it another spin, especially as you can as well use it in Amplitube, which, UI issues aside, has some nice stuff in there (such as the best fuzz boxes I've come across in software land). It's just that these days I prefer using one of my live boards to record and play at home as well, so amp plugins see rather little usage.

Yep, I got it at launch and only turned it on that day until I got the Satch pack a couple weeks ago. I’ll definitely get some use out of it, it’s going to hold the amps Fractals don’t have. I also got my hands on some of @Deadpan’s caps of the Granophyre and JEL heads. Both packs are great, but the JEL pack might be my favorite modded Marshall tone yet.

Well, if ya wanted to give it a spin let me/us know. I’d assume you’d probably rather have some not-metal amps, though.

Ah that's probably why I missed it then.

I think the included stuff coming with Amplitube Max and ToneX Max should keep me busy for a while. The only collection I've seen so far that moved my needle somewhat more was Bonamassa's Dumbles. But as said, so far I'm not even familiar with the entire ToneX ecosystem.
Given that I own a licence for ToneX max already may however end up in me buying a ToneX One - which is quite an amazing little unit. Possibly the perfect jam partner for the holidays as it can be powered from a smartphone.
