IK Multimedia TONEX

I think the included stuff coming with Amplitube Max and ToneX Max should keep me busy for a while. The only collection I've seen so far that moved my needle somewhat more was Bonamassa's Dumbles. But as said, so far I'm not even familiar with the entire ToneX ecosystem.
Given that I own a licence for ToneX max already may however end up in me buying a ToneX One - which is quite an amazing little unit. Possibly the perfect jam partner for the holidays as it can be powered from a smartphone.

I’m definitely going to snag at least one One, but probably two. One to keep down here for a backup ‘rig’ and one I can keep in New England for when I’m with my friends/fam on vacations. I’ve certainly spent more on dirt pedals that do one thing.

I'll have to give it another go. I have been down on Tonex recently and getting into NAM. The main thing that bugs me about the One is that it overwrites the preset setting when you turn the knobs. Otherwise it is useable if you can deal with the wonky software thing.

FWIW:

I have and use both the software and hardware (the OG pedal and the One). I have Tonex Max and several of the signature collections; ODS Legends, MESA/Boogie Reference, Joe Satriani Amp Vault and Brown Sound 78/79.

There are some great captures in those signature collections for sure. IK also recently made new factory presets across the board. But 95 pct. of the time I'm using Tonex, I'm using captures from Amalgam Audio. I'd say that if one is interested in giving Tonex a serious go, one should definitely not limit oneself to captures from IK but also try captures from Amalgam Audio.

So it autosaves if you change any knobs? Can you not turn that off?

Excited to see more people joining the party here. It’s important to beware of both positive and negative hype with this stuff. Tonex isn’t perfect but IMO it’s not nearly deserving of the amount of flack it receives.

The more people that participate, the better chance we all stand at seeing this mature a bit.

My application so far has just been in the studio and it’s worked great for me. My expectations were “amp tone that feels like I’m playing through an amp but I won’t be able to tweak much” and found that wasn’t truly the case. Sure, the EQ doesn’t work the same way the modeled amp’s EQ works, but that’s kind of a moot point when you have a capture you dig considerably but it just needs to be a little brighter or have some more mids. If I’m recording and I just need some more treble, I’m not looking to turn the treble knob and get more gain in the process, or start figuring out interactive EQ knobs, I just want it recorded and sitting in the mix.

Try if you haven't already, to move the eq to pre instead of post. I find it works great that way too!

You can plug it into a phone and stream audio to it, power it and play it. Those features get my One way more use than the original pedal which is a little more clunky with USB audio and obviously needs its own power.

Please try the VIR cabs! Move the mics around, use the resonance slider. The VIR cabs are majorly overlooked!

I so wish IK would expand on them!

Shit, I hadn't even looked at that area of it yet. I'd say 95% of the captures I've played from the Satch pack, JEL and Granophyre were usable with a slight EQ tweak and then maybe 5% were more along the 'these will probably work in a mix somewhere along the way but I won't be jammin with them'

I gotta play that JEL now...

A few of members here are not doers, they're disruptive chatty kathies that bounce back & forth between TGF, T.O.P. & some other places ~ All hat & no cattle.

One of the reasons I landed on TGF after *leaving* T.O.P. is that the talent/doer level here is *very* high ~ I hope I can contribute soon, I'm slowly reassembling my studio after a *big* move...

As far as the peanut gallery, ignore/shun them & they'll crawl back to T.O.P. circle jerk :whistle

I am *very* interested in ToneX as a serious tracking tool, would ♥️to see it mature into a numero uno contender!

IMO Tonex is a great tracking tool, in part because you can use it in so many ways.

I’ve been tracking an EP with a combination of Tonex and my tube amps through a Suhr RL. When I get something I really like out of the amp, I pull up Tonex and make a capture to save with the session. This gives me an escape hatch in the event I need to retrack something later. Huge bonus is that I can drop that capture into my Tonex pedal and either take it out to a power amp and cab, or slap an IR on it and go direct to the PA.

Thats a lot of ground covered.

I know. I tried checked a mate's one when we were touring for a week and I've just been amazed at what you can get out of such a small device.
Sure, on unit operation is a bit tedious, but for some jamming I may need 2-3 patches or so and be done.
I'm actually also thinking about getting two of them to replace the two amp "channels" on my main board, but now that the new Helix has been released, I will delay that decision for the time being.
