Yeah, that creates some issues. With single coil pickups it works OK but is really really hot with humbuckers.

Yeah, I may turn it down again. Bought this one used and after a factory reset it was at +8.5. It's actually not clipping with my two main axes (they're all humbucking but very conservative in terms of output), but I can make it clip with other guitars. The bad thing being that I will then as well have to rebalance all the DAW patches I've come up with so far, because they're really sounding like the hardware right now.

I've been doing DIY pedal stuff lately, which leads to a lot of loud effects that don't necessarily play well with the frontend of digital stuff (especially the Tonex...), so I've been thinking about grabbing something like one of those compact high voltage tube preamp pedals like the Kingsley or Tubesteader ones, or maybe even a used Friedman IR-D, and running it this way.

I did some experiments with Helix preamps into some power amp captures and got pretty good results (a little tricky to dial in the levels, but I got it). I want to try the reverse too (Tonex preamp capture > Helix, maybe with the Helix setup with a Super amp model set flat and clean).

I'm also sort of curious how a Tonex power amp capture compares to the Friedman "DSP IR" power amp sim. I'm guessing it's much better as that doesn't seem to be the strong point of those pedals.

currently trying to restore my database from a backup.
I tried to do a local search of all of my own 'scoob701' and couldn't find any. Then I tried a search for 'scoob701' on tonenet and nothing. This one is a mess.
I went to my other authorized computer and all of my own local stuff was gone. Luckily the tonenet search for 'scoob701' worked but I had to download all of my own files. I have one marble left and if I lose it, there's gonna be trouble.

On the 'good' computer, I tried a local search with 'live ready sound' and it came up dry. That's BS because I have the 50th Triple from you. Tonenet 'live ready sound' works on that computer.

To further confuse matters, what the fuck is this? Even I import a .txp file from a purchased package, it should not log me as the creator.

I did a new power amp capture recently. Posted a link to it. Played a bit yesterday and was really happy with the results. That’s rubbing the preamp of my amp into an HX Stomp and running Tonex on the computer.

I’ve been curious to get a nice preamp pedal as well, really like that hybrid setup.

Anyone has issues with the Tonex app recently ? Since a couple days, the standalone version is frustratingly unresponsive, any action like selecting another presets or turning a button on the tonestack takes 10 seconds. And when I load Tonex as a VST in my DAW, it simply freezes. I uninstalled/reinstalled it (Win 10 machine here) but no improvement. I contacted support too...

+8.5 on the hardware. From all I know, that's the default.

I just got my Tonex One (yep I jumped in too) and to get the brown sound packs to sound right, I had to lower my input volume on the hardware to 0.5... 8.5 was just unusable distorted mush.

FWIW I keep my Tonex hardware input set to 0.0 (and had the same experience with that pack and most packs). It seems odd to me that 8.5 would be the default.

Ok, that's weird then.

Fwiw, I followed the "advised" settings from here:

to set up my Motu M2. Seems to work pretty fine. And with the Tonex gain at +8.5, things seem to sound identical. But I'm defenitely "clipping" (which, according to your information, it actually isn't) occasionally when hitting the bridge humbucker of my Schecter Nick Johnston (apparently a not too hot kinda standard PAF snagged from a Framus). Not noticing any digital clipping, though, which pretty much proves your point.

So I'm a little confused. Setting the TO's gain low enough to never run into the red no matter how hard I slam it, defenitely results in the patches not sounding like in the plugin anymore, they're quite undergained in that case. Alternatively, the plugin could be overgained - but given that most patches seem to sound as I think they might sound, I think my level setup is fine. What to do now? I defenitely want the plugin and hardware to sound the same.
Guess my best bet for now would be to lower the TO's gain and do the same for the plugin. Thing is, I never want to touch that setting on the pedal again, with the plugin it's not all that important.

The input trim does not impact clipping at the A to D conversion but you definitely can clip the signal internally if the trim is too high. You really don't want clipping!

Also, the input trim is a global setting but you can also adjust the input level on a per preset basis with the cab block gain control. They both are clean adjustments to the level before the capture.

I'm pretty aware of these by now (the only new information being that the global gain control is in fact sitting post AD - but it possibly makes sense with a pedal of this kind), but I'm a little confused as to how to deal with the now different gain stages between plugin and hardware.

0 is the recommended trim setting for humbuckers on the pedal

another factor though is the down stream device as you can also tailor the output signal.

After that I just use the patch amp gain to adjust where it should be.

Just curious: how is your gain staging when running the Mesa preamp into the power amp capture on the Tonex?

(When running Helix preamps into the Tonex, I was sending out at instrument level so as to not clip the Tonex, leaving the Tonex input trim at the default, and then adjusting the capture’s gain until it felt “right”)

Training times have massively improved on my system (3900x with 3090 GPU). They've gone from ~40 mins to around ~30-35 mins and now approx 10-15 when all is said and done. I've always done "Advanced" training which is now "Extended". The new Modeller app is such an improvement for a bunch of reasons, credit where credit is due. ToneX captures are no longer a painful process, well done.
