Hopefully....I'm going to eat some crow (Fender Tonemaster Pro content)

It's not anywhere near as universal as the Eddie-chasing was and still is. With that said Tool has a truly fanatical following and enough of those fans are guitar players or were inspired to start playing because of Tool that chasing his tone (and playing the songs) is definitely a thing for quite a few.

Can’t really overstate Tool’s fanatical fanbase. I thought Dream Theater fans were the upper echelon of elitist, mostly because I absolutely was an elitist DT fan back in high school and “You just don’t understand the complexity of their music” was something I stated often in their defense. With Tool fans you get “You just don’t understand the complexity of their music, nor understand the mastery of their metaphysical efforts that have turned them from mere human beings into the literal magicians they are today.”

My ex wife was one of them. Maynard’s singing about fuckin’ country boners and using teenager euphemisms for song titles and -

Yep it's for sure generational and it frankly drives a lot of gear trends. In the 80's people got into modded amps and racks, quite a bit because of Eddie. In the 90's people got big into Dual Recs and scooping mids. Then in the 2000's, people rediscovered boosted Marks and that blew up again. People tends to want to sound like their idols from when they were a kid.

Tool is my generation, I didn’t realize their tone was something people chased though.

No offense to it, I just didn’t realize “Adam Jones tone” was a thing. But that style of music was never my thing, so I haven’t spent much time in those circles

This is "hey maybe I need a TMP" stuff right here:

Guthrie does this with an FM9 and FAS users have been employing IRs to get violin tones for nearly a decade now.

Not surprising at all. The QC doesn't have a decent Swell/ Slow Gear block, so we're left out in the (relative) cold. I guess I could always put my EHX Attack Decay in one of the FX loops, if I decide to get half serious about this. (Then again, the Attack Decay is 10x the usability headache compared with any FAS product.)

EHX: "Let's make these unique, super niche pedals that require special signal chains a lot of times to make sense but let's make sure there are no presets or ability to control/route anything of any useful meaning. Oh and let's make sure the quality control is sketchy on top of that so you never know if the pedal is actually going to work."

"Let's add a dozen LEDs the size and shape of the head of a pin, each with a half dozen color-coded states representing interdependent modes. Ooh! Let's make them buttons that you can't see while you're actually pressing them, and then wedge them in between as many potentiometers as possible."

("Let's have Bill Ruppert create a demo and give everyone who ever tries to use this thing an inferiority complex.")

P.S. I just found out this exists, and it wouldn't surprise me if I were to actually much prefer it over its big brother:

Only $20 less than the full-fat version, though? Not exactly a great value proposition.

For what it's worth, TMP has a great swell/slow gear model and a right decent Feedbacker too. I've been playing with both to make some esoteric sounds since there isn't a dedicated synth block.

But I believe they'll get one at some point with @stilwel being a product manager. He eats creative and avant-garde guitar sounds up as I do

Yeah, that was the first thing (for me, the first problem lol) I noticed in the video I posted above.

You have my attention. :) I really wish NDSP would get a move on Rabea X compatibility for QC. A synth block would be a lot of fun. Right now the most you can do is pile on modulated reverbs until you arrive at something like a pad, but this approach is pretty limited.

Honestly it probably has more to do with chasing a feeling than actually getting the tone, which is probably 99.99% of gear purchases (or "journeys") in the first place. People who loved listening to Tool and want to line up that experience while playing guitar, if that makes sense.

@timbuck3 Can you explain the logic that goes through you mind when deciding which thread you're going to post a video into? It seems totally random and I'm often left wondering what the connection is between the video and the content of the thread.
