Helix Talk

I was looking for inspiration today and decided to start flipping through factory presets, which usually doesn’t yield much for me. However, I came across “Bill & Ted at CERN” which is a super tasty ambient patch.

Can I now have my royalties, @Digital Igloo?

Hei Dude, keep your hands off my stack! (play Pink Floyd's Money as a soundtrack) :rofl

I've asked for the snapshot bypass and for direct parameters assignments being independent form snapshots (added in fw3.5) since fw 2.0.
All things the good guys at Line6 delivered. It took some time but they did it.

I think the last thing that's missing is making snapshot independent also the ext amp command (and maybe other instant commands I'm not aware of).

Right, but how do you assign a footswitch to bypass it? If you bypass it you have 2 parallel paths that are the same, doesn’t your signal get louder? Do you have to assign the footswitch to the mix instead? Admittedly I haven’t experimented with this much, I just assumed it might be a problem.

It could be a chorus if it had a mix knob. Or on a parallel path.
https://homespuneffects.com/RetroReelMix.hlx I think you have to right click and save as or else you'll just get a XML file. I have the FS2 turning it on and off and expression pedal one adjusting the mix. I quickly mashed it together so it could use some polish. Should work on anything because I made it on HX Stomp.

Has anyone been able to get a good Jerry Garcia style envelope filter sound out of helix? I know people have said this is a weak point in helix and I see what they mean. I'm getting like half way there with Autofilter but struggling. What is the best envelope filter model for this in helix? Should I try the legacy options?

There’s a Reverb video all about getting Garcia tones with Helix used as an example, and they have a patch too, and iirc they cover the filter. I don’t remember how close it sounded, but might be a good starting point:

ETA: the FX part starts around 23:30.

Nice, thank you! I’ll check this out later

No problem! I did watch that part of the video really quick, and he doesn’t go into too much detail on specific settings, but he’s using Auto Filter in low pass mode (as opposed to the Mutant Filter). The patch is free though, and that will have the settings so I’d def check that out, but like he says in the vid, you’ll probably have to tweak it to your guitar and playing style.

If that or Mutant Filter don’t work for you, maybe try Tron Down and Tron Up in the Legacy filters.

You could also try asking somewhere like the gratefulguitar subreddit.

Good luck!

The filters are really one of the weak spots in the HX-verse, if you want something else but plain touch wah or kinda Mutron sounds.
Tried to go for a kinda synth-ish sound for a bit of noodling (on a noodling oriented FB group) and finally had to reach for the good old MS-50. Not exactly satisfying but still better than all HX offerings (unless I'm overlooking something).

Wasn't there a thing back at TGP where someone constantly argued about the envelope filter not existing on the HX stuff? Super pedantic, iirc.

Yep, that one is at the top of my chorus list too. As time goes on and Stadium starts to get it's legs, I hope Line 6 revisits the stable of mod effects. That's one area that for my taste, there are good options, but not really any I'd consider great.
Besides the retro reel, The harmonic trem is great. So is the univibe. So is the Vibrato and tremolo. The ring mod is also great if you like that sound. Chorus, flange and phaser are all decent but unremarkable. Envelope filter and rotary are meh at best.

I have a confession to make.

For the last several months our other guitar player has been losing his mind over intonation issues between our guitars.

Last night I’m tracking with an effect from the HXFX he usually rehearses through - happen to get into the config because now I’m feeling like maybe I’m noticing problems in my own tracks…some asshat (probably me) had the tuner referencing 438. Dudes been just a touch flat the ENTIRE time he’s been in the band.

Welp... I'd be a liar If I said that hasnt happened to me. I was at rehearsal one time and for the first few songs everything is great. Then about 5 songs in I'm hearing serious out of tune-ness coming from...somewhere. I give the bass player and the 2nd guitarist the stink eye after one song. We start the second song and its still there so I stop the tune and ask every one to check their tuning. We start the tune again and its still there and now I'm starting to get pissed. Ok everyone check their tuning again!! But we are all in tune with our respective tuners and everyone is now getting a bit edgy. We take a break and I discover that somehow with random toe tapping I set MY Helix tuner to like 432. I told everyone what happened and we continued after the requisite ribbing from the entire band.

Another time, we start a tune and I'm way out suddenly - super sharp on every string. So I tune down, we play the tune and everything is great. I look down at my bridge after the tune is over and see that the trem bar is caught between my strap and the guitar body which is why the guitar went sharp in the first place. :facepalm

hahahaha. The bassist in my old band did this. None of us noticed for like, a year.

Oops.

It's a tiny dumb thing, but if you set Stadium's Reference Pitch to something other than 440 Hz, the value text turns bright red.
