Or you use a Sennheiser E906/609 style mic and just hang it from the amp handle

I usually didn't like them too much, they can easily get a bit harsh.

Its still not going to come anywhere close to a multi mic'd amp in a pristine environment and ideal listening conditioning

Of course not. But so what?
Apart from that, plenty of decent recordings were made with a single mic.

I don't know about you guys stages, but as a metal band in Germany playing original songs most of the time the stage is so small you could just as well place a single SM58 infront of the stage and it would sound the same 🤣

But why? Why even take the chance when there are five million other moving parts to have to watch murphy's law for? You have 30 seconds. You can hang a mic and pray or you can plug in an IR and know 100000% that its going to be better in every single possible case

Fwiw, a while ago I went to a sort of post-metal-indie-whatever kinda band (unfortunately I don't remember the name, was just passing by and stayed). They played in what is known as a really, really critical environment (small basement club with very low ceilings, "Bei Chez Heinz" in Hannover). Drummer behind plexiglass, both guitar players and the bassist were kempered, all IEM. Best sound this very club has ever seen, possibly by far (confirmed by quite some of the regular visitors).

I'm actually not the guy to defend mics at all. I bought an AMT Pangaea almost the day they were available, searched for some IRs that would at least sort of represent my cabs and never used a mic again for guitars ever since.

We once had our drummer "experiment". He tucked wrapper foil around some wooden beams and hoped it would do the effect of plexiglass. To bring the discussion back to Helix, 2 of the 3 stringers of us played Helix, but it still sucked 😀

If the stock amps are made by Line 6 as the amp is intended , should you therefor not change too much on the EQ settings?

Or perhaps.. change one thing to the right… now slight all a bit to the right?

Not at all. It's just their idea of what they think sounds good with whatever guitars, playing style and output system they used when making those defaults.

99% of the time I don't agree with those and will drastically alter the settings.

I've changed all default amp and cab settings on all amp+cab blocks I've used in the Helix.

Don't even remind me... did that on the Floor (really, for all amps and most drives, sometimes even fooling around a whole lot with the cab settings, some reverbs and delays were "default-ized", too) - and forgot to export them when I sold the Floor. Will have to do that again for the Stomp these days. It's really making things a whole lot easier when building new patches.

So is it all mostly personal taste?

Or is there also an “in general”? Meaning, you dial in your amp and the whole crowd goes: yikes what the fuck was that? 🤣
