Well... I bought one. A used one showed up on GC.com for $599 and with the current 10% off on used items over $499 seemed like a good deal. It needs some work. There a some frets in the middle that get plinky if I pick too hard (ie. my normal picking force). Might just need a truss rod adjustment, but I think it may also need some fret work.
As it turns out my favorite local tech did a refret on Kim's original S-100 back in 2004! Unfortunately my appointment with him is not until Nov 21st. So when I'm not getting frustrated with some plinky notes it sounds and feels great. Oh... one other odd thing. Way back in 1987 when the S-100 was my only guitar and I was attending Berklee I bought a gig bag for it. This new model doesn't fit in the bag it is too long. So not exactly the same. Weird.
Before getting this "Bargain" I had played one other Thayil and the frets were in much better shape. I don't know how much work the store did before putting it out for me to try though.
