Got a Betta Fish Last Week

Update!

We got a small school of six neon tetras for my daughters tank. We did a full cleaning beforehand with a 50% water change, scrubbed all the algae of the glass, took out a couple dying plants, took the background poster off, and added a piece of driftwood. It looks way better with more space. Then added in the tetras and they are a neat change of pace.

I also got a small gold mystery snail for my tank and so far it's hilarious. It's just constantly cruising around the tank, climbing plants, then falling off of plants, and just generally being goofy. My betta is definitely curious and hanging around the snail but doesn't seem overly concerned. Mostly he's just hungry all the time, like me, or my beagle.

It's amazing how different my betta is compared to my daughter's first one. My fish is big, healthy, strong, active, curious, brave, and rarely flares. My daughters fish was smaller, thinner, always fearful, would constantly flare at people or surf the glass, and for a long time rarely left the bottom of the tank.

I can't see getting a pet store betta again. When we went shopping this weekend one store had about 25 cups, about 1/3 of the fish were dead and moldy and most of the rest looked sick or undersized. Maybe 2-3 decent fish and none half as healthy as mine.
