Fractal Talk

It's not that bad...

And you can be more "generic" with the midi control of blocks.

Assign CCs to External Controllers.

Assign said External Controllers to the Bypass of blocks.

Then use those as you see fit per preset.

For blocks, it's all CCs.

There's only 128 CCs in the midi spec and X block types times Y instances of each block is already a large number.

So they leave it to the user to choose what they need.

Aside from block channel and scene changes, it's all standard PC and CC commands.

Block / Scene are also CC but done in a different way.
I concur, it doesn't look particularly baffling and I like the idea of global CC assignments per block type. I wouldn't have to set those up on a per-preset basis like I do with the HX stuff (I would just try to stick to the same scheme throughout my presets) and the channel/scene changing is similar to HX devices (except with FAS you get to set your own message number it seems).

YES!! My fractal FM9 turbo mkII is out for delivery today!

Hopefully your axe-fx III is out for delivery today too @Alex Kenivel :D
Ho boy! I'll have to wait until next week, if at all. Last update was that late trailer two days ago

New Fractal user here also!

I've had the FM3 for a few weeks now. I'm mostly a home player and have had several modelers during the years. Last couple years I went trough a phase of several small tube amps and heaps of pedals, which was fun and all, but I have to say the FM3 is the best single gear purchase I have done in my life. It's a cliché, but WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS BEFORE?

Sure, it has a bit of a learning curve, but the manual, Fractal wiki and forum as well as this forum have been really helpful. The FM3 Edit is just great. Unpopular opinion: the onboard UI is not that hideous either. :sofa

It has been hard to put the guitar down after I got it up and running. It's just so easy to get lost in the greatest toans I have ever been able to create with my gear, and I haven't even messed with that many amps yet - a couple Fenders and a couple Marshalls. They're just so good and easy to get them where I want to. Most of the effects are great and just work. I even like the drives.

Of course, there are some flaws, but I take care of them with other pedals. Fuzzes are a mixed bag, as they are in most modelers. I think some of them are great, especially the various Muff models and the Hard Fuzz. Fuzz Face model is a bit off for obvious reasons, but my Kingtone covers that. Fuzz Rite I just love, so I got that on the board too. I don't even want to talk about the spring reverb in the FM3, but fortunately I have the Surfybear. It leaves a reverb block for other uses as well. :knit

Have you found the FC to be redundant with the FM9 (albeit in your limited time with it)

No, I love it! I got it set to switch between scenes, but two of the switches I also have set for INC / DEC +1 and -1

May change later but for now that is how I set it up and enjoying it. The buttons on fm9 set for presets and bank up/down, but I couldn't figure out how to get the tempo to be set for effects, so still working on it.

For the tap tempo to apply to an effect you need to specify a note subdivision in the individual effect blocks. This is typically located right next to the time or rate parameter of that effect.

I'm talking about how to turn the tempo footswitch into "effects" footswitch, so that when I tap it, it'll show effects layout across the fm9 switches etc.

EDIT: Figured this out now.

That makes me wonder if the Axe-FX III fuzzes are better. Everyone was freaking out about the recent updates on them. I have the Axe-FX III, but I've never used fuzzes, so I can't offer anything useful on this!

I guess some of the fuzz models, especially Fuzz Face, can behave more like the real deal in Axe-FX III since it has variable input impedance whereas in FM3 the input impedance is fixed. That's why it doesn't really sound right and doesn't react to guitar volume rolling like the real pedals do. But that's a very specific thing. You can get many different and great fuzz tones in the FM3, just not all the cork sniffery stuff. :rofl

Great lil' FM3 board!

I love love LOVE it! :love

Yeah the FM3 can sometimes feel slightly more “stiff” compared to the Axe Fx III fuzzes. But I haven’t shot the fuzzes out on those two units for years now. The tones are pretty much there, tho. I’ve never felt I was missing out on the FM3 whenever I put a fuzz on.

Considering just how simple most fuzz circuits are, fuzz enthusiasts can be worse than OD enthusiasts when it comes to cork sniffery. “What do you mean the only two caps that are in this circuit are not using banned soviet-era military-grade caps that give you lung cancer if you look at them for more than 10 seconds?”

(I am a fuzz enthusiast myself, btw, and fully understand the cork sniffery)

Then again you gan get really experimental with all the advanced parameters in the drive block and tailor some unique tones, which makes the fuzzes really versatile. It's really cool to have all the options. And it's healthy even for the cork sniffer to brake out of the chains of authenticity once in a while.

Arghhh this fc-6 thing is frustrating.

Finally reset my fm9 footswitches back to original because every time i keep messing with the fc-6 edit in fm9 editor it keeps changing things on fm9 even though i have drop box set for fc-6 and button clicked and highlighted for fc-6 and not fm9 etc..

I go get things 80% figured out and then suddenly it changes something on my fm9 again and i get all messed up and have to set it back to stock and try it all again....
