Fractal ICONS Plugin

For metal cleans I usually use the 2290 delays because I like the additional chorus, the other clean tones I dial in are generally EJ and Gilmour inspired, so tape delays.

Figured I'd post a clip in this thread if it's cool.
First track using ICONS. All improv, one take, some mindless wankage but I like it . I rushed the mix so don't judge too harshly haha.
The amps feel really great!

Tools were my white tele only into Fractal ICONS plugin. Left was a '59 J Vaughn preset, right was a Band-Commander. Center was the 'Hat Tip To Robin HT' preset, which is a '59 Bassguy Jumped with a Klon and Vibe.
Bass is my Fender Mustang into the Fender Rumble plugin in Studio Pro, I used the Super Bassman with 8x10 cab.
Drums are SD3.

Damn, that sounds great and there's some killer playing in there, man!

That’s sounds killer man
Nice stuff

Perhaps more delays and other effects will be included later. The great thing about the Fractal FX is that they are best in class, based on my experience with the Kemper Profiler and Quad Cortex.

I also wonder if they'll ever release a 1:1 plugin based on the FXIII. It would probably cannibalise sales of the Axe, which I'm sure they've weighed, and I think - based on this plugin - it will be very expensive.

And I'm saying that despite knowing that some plugin, like the Weiss Multiband that Softube just released, cost $599 for the porting of one FX.

I really think this is so far from the truth. Guitarists by and large want HW modellers, they could sell boatloads of plugins for $29 if they wanted and it would funnel towards more HW sales. The number of people that are buying an axefx when they really just want plugins is miniscule. The first thing loads of plugin users ask is “when is the HW coming?”

And from the other side, I’m pretty sure 100% (or close) of the Icon customers from this forum are already Fractal customers. I think (for better or worse) that the main appeal of them is towards people who are already in the Fractal ecosystem, and want a certain level of convenience that doesn’t exist with the hardware. My personal feeling is they should aim for a much wider audience share than what they’ve done with the HW (which has generally been a smaller but tighter customer base). I’m not sure that these plugins have enough appeal to the average user (who might otherwise grab a Bogren/UAD/NDSP/Nembrini/Mixwave/etc plugin on sale).

The great thing about the Fractal FX is that they are best in class
On hardware, I agree when comparing to all in one modellers. In plugin land, I don’t think Icons FX really compete with the best of what’s out there. Delays are too basic, too few reverbs with too little adjustment on offer. They’re simply up against too much.

I think Fractal are largely banking on the fact their amp modelling is best in class. If the amp modelling was (say) Nembrini level, and everything else remained the same, these plugins would struggle big time. And while the modelling is top tier, do the majority of guitarists care enough to put up with a more expensive, uglier plugin vs what else is on offer? It’s only the nerdiest dorks like me who care about chasing the last few % - We’re in a world where One Knob amp sims are selling like hotcakes, and artist/brand tie ins and fancy graphics are the table stakes.

Jack Nicholson Thank You GIF

Appreciate the nice comments fellas!

It's likely they'll add in more effects as time goes on. Even still, it's worth the price for what you get imo. I would like to have more built-in cabs to choose from though, but I get what Fractal was trying to do here. My main hope is once a modern amp ICONS is dropped, will we have the ability to share cabs and effects across the various suites?

At that price point if it’d would kill AxeFx sales it’d be a win. No hardware costs to produce. But there is always the ugly head of piracy right around the corner.
