Fractal Audio Systems VP4 - Virtual Pedalboard

Fractal doesn't get gritty or filtered enough really. I've experimented a lot, and my one observation with delays is that Fractal is nearly always far cleaner than Helix and others.

Yeah they excel more at pristine studio type effects.

I’d love for them to take interest in some of the glitch and grain type effects that are sort of popular. They’d probably come up with a far more usable take on it.

Thanks! Ah the ups and downs of the gear humpin' life... :rofl

Yeah, I didn't love that warranty interaction, to be honest, as it's kind of a known issue, what with a thread in their forum about it + pics that look the same as my busted jack. However, I get it and am thankful they're fixing it and shipping it back at no charge (though I'm still out the $50+ it cost to ship it there).

But overall it's mostly soured me on Fractal products, in that I now see what a pain it will be in the future if I have problems that require repairs/returns, vs the ease of just dropping something off at the store where I bought it in town. And being that I'm still an amp guy and don't use modeling anyway (and love L6 effects) maybe I'll just stick with stuff I can get (and return) in a local store.

The VP4 is still a killer product though, and I was hoping Fractal would release something like it for years, so I don't wanna be a downer in the thread here. I did really enjoy it while I had it.

So my VP4 needing the midi jack repaired has been stuck at FedEx/Customs for over two weeks now... some kind of clearance delay and I can't get any info from FedEx. :brick

Reduced CPU is nice, although I've only gotten close to max when trying to! Otherwise not much of interest for me, so I'll probably just skip the beta. I wonder if they fixed the messed up parameter names in the spring reverbs that I reported a few weeks ago?

I still hold the record for the longest time for not plugging a FAS device into a computer after purchase at almost three weeks I think :rofl

Yes those are fixed 🙂

I put the VP4 back on board for tonights practice. I had been going super slim with just the DD500, RV5, and MercuryX. But earlier conversations on the Plex Reverb made me think about using it tonight at practice, and so I did. Really love that sound. The default settings just need a minor tweak to the mix and the decay, and it sits perfectly in the mix. I love it.

Did the fucking cunt bastard fucking cunts say why?

It’s difficult to make sense of the various electronic notices. They’ve all said something different. I’m waiting to go and ask in person, once it arrives back. So frustrating and annoying.

Also imagine I’m going to have to pay another $50+ to try and ship it again…

Missing out on so much lol.
No doubt, but I have five absolutely killer presets dialed in that do everything I want to do; clean Jazz, clean Funk, mild overdrive for Blues/Blues Rock, crunch for Classic Rock, and high gain Lead with delay.

I've been dialing them in over the years and now they sound exactly the way I want. Why do a firmware update? If it ain't broke...

"But it could sound so much better..." I don't want it to sound better, I really like the way it sounds now.

"It could sound even better" leads to tweaking...time spent fooling with the gear and not playing music. I gigged with a Super Reverb and nothing but a Zendrive for years. I'm really not a kitchen sink preset kind of guy.

I've been using the Fractal GUI for over a decade now starting with the Ultra. Haven't felt the need to use the editor.

So yes, I'm undoubtedly missing out on a lot and definitely not using the FM9 to its full potential but I like to keep it simple and have zero FOMO because I absolutely love what my FM9 is doing the way it currently is.

The one thing I really wish the VP4 had was relays for switching channels on amps without MIDI.

That was a great feature on the FX8 and is the only reason why I still have one to use with my Sig:X and Deliverance 120.

Your approach makes a lot of sense. For purely using it as a performance device, I see zero fault in that approach.

My enjoyment of top tier modelers is really two things: quality of sounds and ease of live performance for direct gigs as one, and creatively coming up with new sounds and exploring things I haven’t really used before as the second.

That second one is a whole lot easier with axe-edit. That first one is easier if I never touch anything and just dial it in and leave it alone. Once I’ve created something new that I like, I can’t stop myself from bringing it into the live scene to see how it works out there. I end up in these arcs where I get things just right, use them live for a while, get a new idea that I try (or more likely - 7 new ideas), re-do the live stuff to take advantage of the new stuff, get things just right over a few gigs, repeat…

That’s the fun of these boxes for me. I’ve always repeated this loop. Now I don’t have to build a new board and spend a lot of money or a lot of time buying and selling boxes to do it.

Part of me wishes I could be that guy that just gets it dialed and leaves it alone though lol.
