EVH 5150III Hypersonic 6L6: the EVH Tonemaster

This is typical Fender hubris, I love EVH (the player) I hate Fender (the Company), totally overpriced!!
Something i wouldn't give a nano second of thought. And i wonder who decided this was a good idea and we should ask a premium straight up ripoff price for this.

Couldn't talk about this before, but this is basically the EVH version of the Tonemaster series of amps, ala Tonemaster Twin, Tonemaster Deluxe, etc. Like the Tonemaster cousins, I think it's pretty damn expensive for what's still a single model modeling amp. But perhaps the simplicity will appeal to people. Obviously the Tonemasters have at least been a moderate success, for them to continue on this path.

Would have been cool if you could "switch the tubes" to the EL34, but I'm sure they'll come out with more amps. Also wish they offered this as a head.
$1,699.99, they are insane!!! Adding 6L6 to the name its even insane-er!!!

I agree with most reviews on the pricing being ins-ane; you can buy a Hypersonic FR-12 for $660 instead, and still have a thousand bucks left to buy a preamp/modeller of your choice.

I think a power amp + cab would be more of a fair comparison since a lot of people interested in these probably don’t want an FRFR, but even then you might even end up cheaper than $660 if you shop around!

I really think Fender should do a powered cab with guitar speakers in this form factor. The price would have to be right, but I think a lot of people would be attracted to the simplicity and aesthetic.

(Speaking of which, I wonder if anyone has tried running a modeler into the FX return of a Tonemaster Bassman. That’s 4x10, which isn’t to everyone’s taste, but I think it’s the only Tonemaster besides this one that has an FX loop. The price wouldn’t make sense at all, but I wonder if it sounds good… I’m guessing these Tonemaster amps just use the standard ICEpower modules?)

Yep. That’s this whole line of amps in general. This one’s priced even higher, but all of them seem like good amps with pros and cons… but the prices make nooo sense at all.
For the same money an FM3, 1x12 cab and whatever inexpensive power amplifier you would destroy that POS.

Fender is dragging the EVH legacy through the mud with some of this shit.

Save a few hundred and go with the AM4.

Yeah, you could grab an AM4, an actual brand new 2x12 EVH cab with G12Hs, and one of several inexpensive power amp options and still end up ahead, or go used or 1x12 for the cab and get a better power amp than this presumably has.

Or even skip the AM4 and go for the UA Anti 1992 if you’re cool with the block letter Peavey version of this sound.

That would be the kind of thing I'd actually want. An EVH 1x2 or 2x12 with built in poweramp.
If I was to stick to the EVH branding then market it to be used with any of the EVH amps direct to the cab, or plugin the TMP to the poweramp and have your digital rig running through poweramp/cab. Would make a great companion to the lunchbox and 50w head sizes.

Yep, and I think there's another whole market with products like the IR-X (etc), Imperial Preamp, and the many, popular solid state and high voltage tube preamp pedals out there, and even a Synergy + SYN1 / SYN2 setup.

Maybe Fender sees it as hurting their other categories though: they don't sell individual preamps, a powered cab like this removes a feature from the TMP (the cabsim), and making such a product "admits" to some degree that their FRFR speakers aren't quite the same experience (even if very good).

I bought my EVH 50W Stealth head for $1K. I can get a 1x12 used near me for $200 with a speaker I like.

Tell me why, other than concentric EQ pots for the blue and green channels, should anyone buy this?

Poor Eddie
