EVH 5150III Hypersonic 6L6: the EVH Tonemaster

You know what else is weird, the EVH Hypersonic brand was previously used for an FRFR speaker. This combo amp has nothing to do with the Hypersonic speaker, which still has no other EVH associated gear that you would use with it. What's the point?

On the Fender side, they use Tonemaster for digital modeling combos, the standalone digital modeler, and the FRFR. It seems like EVH Hypersonic is the EVH equivalent but it only includes the single digital combo and one size of FRFR so far. So, I have no real issue with the Hypersonic name representing digital related items in the EVH line. It’s consistent with Tonemaster at least.

I do think the price point and the small target market will make it a tough sell. I get that pretty much anyone on this forum is not who it is targeted for, but who is the market? I think the Tonemaster DR was a pretty big hit with gigging country guys and club back lines, but I am wondering if the EVH fan and higher gain worlds have enough people who want to gig a lighter weight 1x12 combo.

It's funny to me that EVH is the premium version, the Hypersonic FRFR is a rebranded Fender FRFR for more money for a different badge I think?

Pretty much. The Fender FR-12 comes in black or tweed currently for $630 and $675. The EVH comes in black or white for $660 and $699. So $25-30 more for the EVH which probably is pretty close to the royalties they are paying for the name? Just a guess.

Weird product at this price...

I do think it sounds pretty good (better than the Katana's high gain sounds, at least without a bunch of Lambchopper-style tweaking)

Obviously they're doing this because they own the brand, but a lot of the normal arguments for this sort of thing kind of become moot with an amp you don't need (or even necessarily want) to crank.. the selling points basically just become "well, you can use headphones and record it direct", "it's not cheap, but it's 100USD cheaper!", and "it's not compact or light, but it's lighter!" I guess there's the upkeep argument, which is more relevant with amps that use so many tubes, but the repairability and warranty aspects makes that more complicated.

I feel like Fender / EVH should just be doing UA amp pedal type things, even if a mini head format or something, piecing out their TMP models. Sell them to plug into their well-liked FRFRs.

Though I guess the appeal of these for a lot of people is the whole "guitar speaker and cab in the room" thing. Maybe they should just create a powered cab that uses guitar speakers. If the power amp is decent, there's probably a good market for that anyway. Too bad that Tone Master Twin doesn't have a power amp input / FX return. You could grab that for 1300USD, get 2x12 and 200 watts, and plug a Tonex One, UA Anti 1992, or used HX Stomp or Nano Cortex in and end up ahead AND with the Fender amp sounds too.

High gain combo amp, except it’s digital and solid state and $1700 when 6505 style combos are circa $500-$800 usd. I really have to wonder who asked for this.

Was just about to post this on the Digital & Modelling forum. Got excited about the prospect of a digital preamp coupled with a tube power section but, oh, Fender...

I don't think Eddie would approve 😞 Been checking a couple demos of the thing and while it doesn't sound bad, it definitely sounds like last-gen modelling.

I agree with most reviews on the pricing being ins-ane; you can buy a Hypersonic FR-12 for $660 instead, and still have a thousand bucks left to buy a preamp/modeller of your choice.
