Dream Theater Megathread NEW SONG POSTED!!!!!

I got a chuckle out of him opening with Paradigm Shift. Coincidentally, around the same time as this clinic, I caught Mike Portnoy at a local drum clinic where he played Paradigm Shift using the stems, but sans-drums. 😆

So that "banger", TSMI, how does that "calypso" piano break sound to you now? (I love it! And it's not ragtime.)

Hmmmm.......

I am less triggered by it than I was initially. :idk

I love the transition out of it, though---that is tight! :chef

Damn you and your 8 string, John Petrucci. :love

You still contemplating a 7, @TSJMajesty ??
Yes, I do want one. There's so many DT/JP songs I mess around with that would be theoretically easier (provided I can handle that extra string) on a 7, as opposed to using the VC in the Axe III.

Like this run in JLMB:

Which on a 6 string, goes like this:

with a very fast shift to grab that 12th fret. (I could shift it in other places too, but ya gotta do it somewhere.)

But on a 7 it becomes:

And then turn the VC back on, etc.

That run in The Shadowman Incident right before the Calypso solo from Jordan
is so f'ing good. :chef

Timestamped.....

:rawk

It's actually not too hard to play too! But it is fast!

It's diminished:

2x's (the the open E riff in btw:

)

2x's

It's got a similar vibe to this part in Octavarium (cued):

I think Midnight Messiah is my favorite song on the album. I actually really like the abrupt transition into the chorus and the nods to old school thrash

I may have been wrong about Dead Asleep. There is a lot in there I really like after another listen. I’m always a fan of polyrhythms, and I love all the duple juxtaposed over triple stuff. Cool riffs, and I like the flanger use.

It’s just the vocal melody that kills it towards the end.

Wake……………. Up……………. I……. was…….. dead……… asleep……….
