Fairly DT-by-numbers, but man, am I fucking glad to be hearing those drums in this band again. That's enough to get repeated listens from me. The drums sound natural in DT again! Petrucci's got some great lead tones in this, sounds like he's totally dry for one of them. Rhythm tone is a bit....subdued? Not bad at al, I'd just like to hear a bit more presence in them.

Vocals were completely unmemorable after 2 listens. I can't remember a single vocal melody from the song and it just stopped playing 15 seconds ago. LaBrie doesn't sound bad, there's just nothing there to grab onto for me.

They certainly let Portnoy make is presence known with some of those signature fills right in the intro. The band is sounding great. I don't think this particular track is anything standout amongst their rich catalogue of songs, but there wasn't much to dislike either. I look forward to hearing the album.
 
Less than 1 minute into it and I got a big ole smile on my face after hearing/seeing those distinctive Portnoy fills!!

Chorus feels reminiscent of Invisible Monster. Not a bad thing.

I can hear the song being a continuation of BC&SL, as well as DOT.

Coulda done without the whole section around 4:00 though. But that's DT.

I almost wished Jordan had created, or better yet, built upon that signature patch that he seems to love so much. Seems a tad dated.

JP's solos were amazing as usual, especially the one that seemed to have hardly any effects, and the final one going back into the last chorus. Someone probably has already learned them, and tabbed them out! :rofl

It's not the DT I would've hoped for, but all in all a pretty admirable effort, considering they've been writing prog music for 40 or so years. I'm betting the best is yet to come!

Oh, and I like the setting of the video. Very cool!

I'm digging it!! 4 stars!

Surprised we gotta wait until February for the full release.

Definitely anxious to hear the 20 minute closer on the album, though!
 
First of all Mike is back.
I'm so glad to hear his sound and style that everything else seems less important.

Now...the song is ok, not bad, not memorable. LaBrie sounds pretty good and that's good news.

Petrucci tone is a bit too dark for my tastes and for the song in my opinion. A more in your face tone would have worked better.

Anyway. Welcome back guys, welcome back Mike.
 
Surprising it's a Sneap mix and the guitars aren't right up front. Looking over Reddit earlier there's a few people mentioning the guitars sound like they could use a bit of top end as well. Could just be a single-release mix while the version that goes on the album gets a bit different of a treatment.

Hmmm, during one part I had trouble picking out the keys.
Perhaps it was a harmony that I just didn't notice.
I thought the guitars were typical DT mix.

And speaking of guitars, first time ever seeing JP with covers on his PU's.

And that's a new color I wouldn't be at all surpised to see EBMM release soon, probably in some limited run. I like the chrome on the knobs. Not sure about those covers though.

And they'll probably price it higher than a comparable solid-finish Majesty..., just because John's using it on the first song released on such a significant album. Similar to how the Purple Nebula sold, due to him using it on his long-anticipated 3rd solo album.

At least, that's my prediction, for what it's worth. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, I noticed the new Majesty. Would have preferred it without the shield inlays + the DT inlays, one or the other! Solar has a few models with both dots and the Solar inlay at the 12th fret, it's just too much....but I'm pretty much a "Blocks or nothing" guy at this point with inlays. :rofl

Can't say I'm a fan of those covered pickups. I didn't dig them on the PIA's and while I didn't look too hard at these, they're just busy looking to me.

I’m sorry. And I say this as a die hard, long time Dream Theater fan, but sitting here, I can’t recall anything memorable from this track. It just isn’t pulling me back in for a re-listen. Absolutely no hook, nothing catchy, just nothing new. Just meh.

This very well could’ve been a b-side from the last 3-5 albums. Sorry, but…

Maybe I'm just fickle, or my excitement of finally getting to hear a new song with Portnoy got the better of me, but I will say I haven't had the desire to go back and listen to it a 3rd time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
