Does an amp make sense for what I'm describing?

Well, now I think I might be fooling myself/justifying my purchases since I didn't know better. The difference between my Marshall 1912 and the Black Cat V30 is noticable in stereo with my Engl AE50, which is somewhat adjusted by my having the Black Cat Combo running in stereo at the same time.

So I need to discern if I need to upgrade my 1x12's or what have you. I was somewhat surprised at this, so expressed that.

I'm just chasing tones for tube amps at low volume, and learning things that occasionally alarm, not always in a way that I want. If you have any better suggestions for 1x12's with Orange Terrors and Engl AE50 and Fireball, I'm all ears.

I'm not insisting I have the best setup or tone by any measure. I want better tones, in fact.

If that’s the case, I would suggest changing the opinion you have about a cabinet because one jack ass on the internet holds a negative opinion of that cab is not likely to lead to success :beer

But if it's a whole lot of people agreeing... maybe I should try something else and find out. My only other reference point is the GB12-150 in my Marshall cab.

The issue seemed to be with the Orange Rocker 15 - I have the Terror, as well as a Dark - and the Orange cab.

Is that a bad match? I bought the Ortange cab to go with the Orange Terrors.
I don't know; none of those amps are what I would consider remarkable, at least for my tastes.

I wouldn't use an amp for home use only. But that's just me. Bout to go fire up the helix into a small studio monitor as a matter of fact. Sounds plenty good for writing riffs and working on our set. For me "FRFR" sounds perfect at low volumes by yourself but then like shit w a band super loud. Amps are like opposite lol. They sound great loud w a band but then I don't like them super quiet by myself.

Headphone jack disables the speaker taps. I've ran it that way for long periods of time a bunch of times.
Okay, I knew that, but running it without a cab load at all?? That's a new one for me.

I see the post from Mr. Kaplan that @GuitarBilly74 references, but he never does clarify about long term usage. After digging a littler further, I see a post from a few years later someone saying they ran theirs with no cab and headphones for recording sessions.

Not that it's useful to me in any way, it sounds like sizzled turds, I just learned something today. Sorry for the derail.

Or maybe not a derail? @Jarick get yourself a 5150iii 50W. Fender cleans, Plexi (ish) crunch, and modern high gain :idea

I shot an IR of the headphone out :bag

Any possibility of going with a bigger 2x12 like a PPC212 or a deeper 1x12?

I wasn’t really happy with my V30 until I loaded it into a 14” depth cab.

I went 2x12 (11.5” depth) to 2x12 (14” depth) to 4x12 (14” depth) over the past few years. Once I started evaluating them in deeper cabs, I enjoyed my dirty tones much more.

That's definitely something to consider as well, as there's 2x12 cabs fairly commonly available used. I had played and really enjoyed the 4x12 Orange cab before I bought the 1x12, and you can hear a pretty how much different that is compared to the 1x12 here:

The Katana Artist I had before was like an oversized 1x12 open backed cab, and that had a pretty decent low end response although it also had some nasty upper mids. The Fender FR-12 is a bit bigger than the Orange and the low end is massive, although it's a different style.

When I run the Rocker 15 through a load box and into a cab sim it sounds a lot better. It's still not my cup of tea but leads me to thinking it's much more the cab than amp.
