Does an amp make sense for what I'm describing?

Thank you so much for your contribution. Or should I be more actively aggressive about such useless comments?
Don't be a dick. You asked a question I answered it with experience with the amps that you mentioned. It's just an opinion, if you don't like it then ignore it.

I wouldn't use an amp for home use only. But that's just me. Bout to go fire up the helix into a small studio monitor as a matter of fact. Sounds plenty good for writing riffs and working on our set. For me "FRFR" sounds perfect at low volumes by yourself but then like shit w a band super loud. Amps are like opposite lol. They sound great loud w a band but then I don't like them super quiet by myself.

Headphone jack disables the speaker taps. I've ran it that way for long periods of time a bunch of times.
Okay, I knew that, but running it without a cab load at all?? That's a new one for me.

I see the post from Mr. Kaplan that @GuitarBilly74 references, but he never does clarify about long term usage. After digging a littler further, I see a post from a few years later someone saying they ran theirs with no cab and headphones for recording sessions.

Not that it's useful to me in any way, it sounds like sizzled turds, I just learned something today. Sorry for the derail.

Or maybe not a derail? @Jarick get yourself a 5150iii 50W. Fender cleans, Plexi (ish) crunch, and modern high gain :idea

I shot an IR of the headphone out :bag

Any possibility of going with a bigger 2x12 like a PPC212 or a deeper 1x12?

I wasn’t really happy with my V30 until I loaded it into a 14” depth cab.

I went 2x12 (11.5” depth) to 2x12 (14” depth) to 4x12 (14” depth) over the past few years. Once I started evaluating them in deeper cabs, I enjoyed my dirty tones much more.

That's definitely something to consider as well, as there's 2x12 cabs fairly commonly available used. I had played and really enjoyed the 4x12 Orange cab before I bought the 1x12, and you can hear a pretty how much different that is compared to the 1x12 here:

The Katana Artist I had before was like an oversized 1x12 open backed cab, and that had a pretty decent low end response although it also had some nasty upper mids. The Fender FR-12 is a bit bigger than the Orange and the low end is massive, although it's a different style.

The issue seemed to be with the Orange Rocker 15 - I have the Terror, as well as a Dark - and the Orange cab.

Is that a bad match? I bought the Ortange cab to go with the Orange Terrors.

When I run the Rocker 15 through a load box and into a cab sim it sounds a lot better. It's still not my cup of tea but leads me to thinking it's much more the cab than amp.

Maybe try some IRs to see if you gravitate towards a certain speaker?

I'm a big fan of vintage Marshall 4x12's with Greenbacks...I also like Mesa 2x12's with V30's. I tend to like the warmer toned mixes either way. So the Creamback 65 seems lilke a solid pick for a speaker.

Having read through the thread and aware of your gear history through other threads, I'd agree with everyone that it's a speaker situation (cab & monitors). Which you alluded to early on as well.

--V30--
Recently tried a bunch of fender BFs, tweed Bassman and a Traynor 15W at a store.
All low volume.

The Traynor with a 1x12 V30 sounded so bad.
Same frequencies stood out in the video you posted w/ Orange PPC 1x12..
Couldn't dial it out with the guitar/amp controls.

--Cab vs Monitors--
My current setup is studio monitors
Used to have 2 amps, wet/dry. 1x12" and a 1x8".

A few times I tried the 1x8" at conversation levels..
Under 74 dB, even the 8" speaker was muffled and lacked clarity.
At those volumes, monitors for sure.

For 80-85 dB and above, I'd keep a cab around for a better experience, even if occasional.

--High end & EQ cuts--

With monitors, I struggle with the high end as well.
Use multiple EQ cuts, and as low as 5 kHz.

But my issues are only at high-ish volumes, (>85 dB in a small room).
At low volumes, I can manage and have a great experience through monitors.

> If you enjoy the cab experience, even at low volume, perhaps try some cabs or a mellower speaker.
> With monitors, I'd rather just cover the tweeter with something..

Jarick, Get one of those Celestion 150M ""FRFR"" 12 inchers and put it in the Orange 1x12. I use 5" monitors and have the 1x12 under the desk. At less than movie volume it can get sweet feedback. (At times :bag)

Awesome feedback and that sounds familiar!

Yes I think I'll try the Creamback 65 at some point. I like the cab experience sometimes for sure.

I think I also will try rearranging the desk and monitors a bit to get a little more distance to the speakers which seems to help control the high end.

I can do that more or less with the Fender FR-12...I actually keep it as you describe, off to the side near the ground so it's more like a real amp experience than the monitors.

My monitors are always pointing away from me. And when playing loud, they are at waist height.

One time the monitors were pointing at me and in line with my face.. I couldn’t control the high end no matter what.

If the tweeter is pointing at me, I’d have to cover it up. No other way I guess.

Go here and pick a flavor (or two) you want: https://www.ebay.com/usr/arthurguitarsound

Then go here and get on the waiting list for a PAE-2: https://axiomeffects.com/

Then get an IR loader like a Mooer Radar or TC Electronic Impulse.

I’m kind of missing the MIDI part but it’s what I did. I can run it directly into my computer or headphones or take out the Radar and go into my effects return if I want to get loud.

Of course the Astro is awesome and the Amp1 is excellent (can you play that quietly though?).
My gawwwd that Axiom box seems like the coolest thing EVER !!!

My GAS is on a hold right now, but someday…

🤣

You may as well get on the list now. There’s a wait.

Quad Cortex is listed, so hopefully will sell today.

There's a Friedman JJ Junior that's been sitting locally for a while at a good price I want to check on. Otherwise I may shop for a good deal on a Creamback and try what I've got through that in my 1x12.

Quad Cortex is sold...

JJ Junior is still available locally...

Wife said that seemed like a good deal...

I mean that feels like the play, right?
