Devin Townsend Megathread

If I'm starting a jam list of Devin Townsend studio tracks and Deadhead is the only song
on it right now. What would be 3 others you'd recommend that are in a similar vein:

1. Long enough to get really involved in.
2. Nice heavy plodding riffs - no galloping or rapid fire stuff.
3. Tons of open space w/o vocals to really stretch out over.
4. At least some regular singing. The screaming stuff works in Deadhead cause of the buildup.
Not a fan of songs where that's the style right out of the gate.

I know the dude's recorded more stuff than Frank Zappa and Prince combined so no way I can weed thru it all.

Only album I've ever owned and devoured by him is Ocean's Machine.
Other than that, his Vai work, and Deadhead, I'm basically a newbie.

Oh, and don’t sleep on Casualties of Cool. One of the most beautiful songs he’s ever recorded IMO:

These were the tunes that turned me into a Dev fan, after Sex And Religion. I downloaded them off Napster and IIRR, thought the Strapping Young Lad Mp3’s I downloaded were some unknown metal band trying to scam Devin Townsend fans.

I watched this one the other day. Such a chill, funny dude. As far as Powernerd stuff goes; the song with the household chores video was probably my favorite? I thought it was going to be a bit more uptempo but all the songs so far have been a bit more introspective. Not in a bad way but also not in a "Hey let's make Strapping Young Lad songs but all in major keys!" that I expected.

Call me ignorant, call me narrow-minded, but I pretty much judge every Devin Townsend album by how much it reminds me of Ocean Machine.

On PowerNerd there‘s some Infinity stuff, there‘s some Terria stuff, and it has some Addicted/Epicloud/Sky Blue/Transcendence moments… but overall it achieves the highest score on the Ocean Machine scale since Accelerated Evolution.
