Devin Townsend Megathread

Instead of mixing my LB thread with Devy; I'll post this here. This statement has me :love:love:love at Friday's setlist possibilities.
"So here's the deal: this final North American tour is going to be something special. We're digging deep into the catalog, pulling out some big ones, and making these shows a true celebration.
If you've ever wanted to step into this world I've built — maybe you caught 'The Moth', or a song found its way to you when you needed it — now's the time. I know things are tough economically, and I don't take that lightly, so I'm doing everything I can to make these shows as meaningful and unforgettable as possible. Let's make this one count."

Methinks you’ll be getting some SYL for sure!

Really hoping he does a 2nd US tour for this run and hits the places he’s not on the current one.

Definitely going to be interesting to see what he does with the setlists. Fan favorites are a tough one for him due to his catalog being so dense and everyone digging different shit. Regardless I have no doubt it’s going to be GREAT!

Ya know, I was just thinking about older Dev songs vs newer ones, his albums have always been a mix of stuff I can’t stop listening to and stuff that doesn’t land with me. I think at this point, he’s been putting out more music I dig on an entire album than he has before. Transcendence, Lightwork and Powernerd all have more than 3 songs I really dig, Lightwork in particular might be my favorite thing he’s done yet.

What I REALLY want to see is him and Vai do Sex And Religion live.

He needs to commit to the stage gear if he does that

I'm going to this show in Denver next month - should be fun. I'm mainly going to see Tesseract (as I missed their headlining tour last year) but Devin always puts on a good show.

I have the feeling JT is gonna return from his trip fired up in some kinda way!
He'll be ordering Laney 4x12" "FRFR"'s!

Short writeup because phone keyboard. Great little venue. Plenty of room and stage but small enough where you can get up close. We were 20 ft away from Devin tops. Holy fucking fuck.

Tesseract was fine. From an oldhead POV; their singer is like an autotuned Simon LeBon and Chino had a baby. I'm generally here for that x1000.

I imagine they're what Sleep Token put masks on and aspire to, albeit with more ADHD in Sleep Tokens case?

Their bassist was a shoeless, preening twat though and God forbid they write a riff you could consistently headbang too. Also; silent stages without guitar amps fucking SUCK if you want to be up close to the stage.

Devin followed up and it was sublime. He did material from all eras and shades of emotion and I really can't describe the level of joy he illicits in my brain. His humility and humor matched with viciousness when called for is really something to behold, always. The band was killer and bonus points for Mike Keneally(sp?) showing and inspiring that us bald old dudes still can melt your fucking face. What a boss :satan If you have a chance to go to this; get on it!

Not sure how I missed this when you first posted it, but I'm glad ya had a great time! He definitely hits you like a force in a live setting.....and probably didn't sing one note out of key the entire set! The Tesseract assessment is spot on. :rofl

I'll take it a step further - Modern rock and metal shows sound generally terrible, regardless of venue or equipment being used.

I saw this show in Raleigh 2 weeks ago and like basically all touring acts I've seen since 2010 or so, the sound was lousy. Too much lows and low mids drowning out everything. Guitars were buried. Vocals were buried. Mid-sized touring metal bands go direct to FOH 90% of the time so there goes a big chunk of those mids. But I also remember the opposite problem before modelers were popular. When I saw Deftones back in '06, shit was so loud I could barely hear the music. Thats not any better.

I'd die to see some metal bands play with electronic drums but there's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening. But I figure if you run everything direct (except for vocals), you could easily balance all instruments and make it sound good with whatever kind of house PA you're dealing with. This is how both of my bands operate live and we usually get complements on how clear everything sounds.

I'm not there with electronic drums yet. Just saw Geoff Tate do Mindcrime in a killer venue that dumped $1.5mil into their PA a couple years ago, (Parker Playhouse) and his drummer is using the newer V-drums that look like an acoustic kit. Modeling has gotten there with recreating guitar/bass tones, but the dynamics of a human hitting actual drums still has a long way to go. There's a limit the snare/toms/cymbals won't go past no matter how they're being hit and in a hard rock/metal show, especially one where the drums were an integral part of the original, it stuck out like a sore thumb.

This is a pretty good example, these hi-hats sound better in this video then they did in the venue that night. My buddies (both musicians, tbf) and I looked at each other during this intro with the not-good stank face. There's just no dynamic change when the song actually kicks in and that ride cymbal.....eek.

Yeah last I heard, even the high-end Roland modules still have that uncanny valley problem when it comes to some kinds of sounds. Yamaha modules sound way better in this regard, especially since you can tweak different sample layers to death and among many other things. And I've been using Superior Drummer live for years and I love the feel and sounds but I've been wanting to move away from laptop usage for live shows.

I'm bound and determined to prove that this kind of approach can work extremely well, even if I'm the only person who'd care one way or another. Down the rabbit hole I go!

Shit, this is exactly how the AxeFX came to be, you got my support!
