Devin Townsend and his Laney LFR full range cabinets

You should get one in the shop!

I might check one out if they made a non-powered version or built-in IR tech.

Just let me plug my Axe-Fx > solid state power amp rig I already have straight into it.

I highly doubt that would happen; at least the power amp part. Removing the power amp kinda defeats a lot of the reasons for these cabs.

With as many quality solid state poweramps as there are out there already, all you'd really need to do is get the crossovers right and these cabs could be powered by pretty much anything.

Whether Laney would actually do it or not is a different story but I don't believe that it would defeat the purpose of the cabs at all.

I didn’t say it couldn’t be done. I’m saying the desirability goes down. I certainly don’t want to carry extra shit. Then again, this particular cab is overkill already.

You wouldn't be carrying extra shit. You'd have to bring a poweramp either way. You'd just have one in a rack or on a pedalboard instead of having it built into the cab.

And if it wasn't built into the cab, that means it wouldn't have to be proprietary. You could use whatever you wanted.

Huh? I’m not carrying a rack. I’m carrying a cab and an FM9. Again, powered cabs in general (which are usually 1x12 anyway) are more portable, and less to carry.

If you are literally only using one specific fully-constructed, self-contained unit like the FM9, Cortex, etc, and one cab, then you have a rig where a built-in cab poweramp makes more sense than not, you're correct there.

But for everybody else who has already bought either a rack poweramp or a pedalboard poweramp, it doesn't make sense to waste money buying redundant gear, so I think it would be better to have a cab without a built-in poweramp in that situation.

I'm saying I think there's room in the market for both SKU's.

I could see some pros using the 4x12 version. Would make a good wet rig.

I disagree, and it looks like Laney, Fender, Friedman, etc agree. You could always build a 4x12 with four Celestion X200’s.

You're saying you disagree that people who have already bought and paid for poweramps wouldn't prefer to use those poweramps?
(Let's not even get into the fact that you're screwed if one of those proprietary built-in poweramps fails)

Also an X200 cab wouldn't really be the same. The Laney has an extra tweeter with a level control. Can't really do that with X200's.

I'm just saying it would be cool to have the option of a non-powered version. If they deliver on the promise of an "FRFR" solution with the punch of a standard 4x12, I'd love to check one out.

One of the most irritating aspects of this "new" guitar centric ""FRFR"" guitar speaker craze is figuring out what power amp is actually going to have enough juice on tap to power them adequately. I'd sure as f hope"2600" (probably RMS) watts is going to do the trick.
