compact board / expression pedal combos

Hey folks, looking to put together a compact board (e.g., single row) but I am struggling to find a board or expression pedal that wouldn’t have the latter hanging over the edges - the boards are typically too shallow front to back. What are other folks doing in this scenario?

Be aware though, using these small is kinda awkward and weird. At least for me that don’t play with shoes…. I have to have my heel on the bottom part of the pedal and then the front of my foot has nothing for support. It works… but it ain’t perfect imo

If you're open to it, the Chase Bliss exp roller expression pedal will fit (esp with flat cables). I tend to prefer the roller because I can get more precise and consistent than with a pedal. May not work for everyone though.

I was skeptical about this, but having used it for a while now I love it. Surprisingly easy to use.

The Dunlop Volume X minis (DVP4) are my go-to expression pedals. I've been using them since I received the AxeFX III and the FC6 and FC12 controllers were not yet available. Pictured below next to a Morning Star MC6.

One of these in your future? The DVP mini looks cool, surprised that it is bigger than the mini wah though.

Those are cool, but I think that using it as a wah would get challenging. Not for other people, but I could see that being part of my obituary somehow.

If you are wearing a "stiff" soled shoe and you don't look at the pedal, it feels like any other expression pedal. For Wah I use auto-activation, so no need to press hard in the toe position to activate a switch.

The issue with mini volumes and wahs is that your feet won't shrink because you use one, so you will need to leave enough space on the board equivalent to a regular sized volume pedal anyway.

This is why I prefer to keep the expression pedal separate. Also lets you position/ angle the pedal precisely to your taste. If it's a MIDI application and you can get away with wireless, the EV-1-WL is great to pull out on an as-needed basis.

But if you do consistently need an expression pedal on your board, making sure it's on the far left or far right edge will help with the problem you're describing:



(This works great as a conventional pedalboard, but if I'm in a writing/ improvisational setting where I want to be working on sounds as I go, I can put it on a desk and break out the wireless expression pedal. Each of my scenes are set up to crossfade between two typical "sub-scenes", e.g. "Clean to Heavy", "Bass to Clean", "Heavy to Synth", etc., so apart from occasional tapping to select modes of operation, all of my "performing" happens on one comfortable expression pedal... which lets me focus more of my waning attention on the guitar.)

Yanno... it's funny you should mention that because after messing around with a few configurators, I think I'm back at having a two row board and full sized expression / wah.
