Rock N Roll Singing GIF by Film Riot

I have a BMW and my first unsupervised concert was the Scorpions' World Wide Live. Come at me, brah.

Dude... I'm from Hannover. And the most hated (well, some other people also love them) export success from this very town has got to be that band.
Fwiw, both my wife and my son are on one of their farewell gigs right here in the local stadium next weekend. You'd have to point a gun to my head to force me going as well (ok, I'm sure the sound will be great).

I'm having a serious question (maybe it's not exactly a real question): We all know that many popular musicians have a pretty strong opinion on political things. And I'm not even talking about what they're doing in their freetime but what's in their lyrics. And there's a huge tradition of political opinions finding their way into song lyrics, in fact, an entire genre ("protest songs") has been named after that fact.
And while this hasn't happened yet (at least AFAICS): Is it allowed to discuss song lyrics here? Because that'd pretty much instantly take us into political territory.

I'm asking because it's a pretty hot topic on a german (recording related) forum. There's a "lyrics" subforum over there and while the general consensus of the forum is "no politics" as well, there's necessarily some politcal content in that very lyrics subforum. The mods over there are actually handling it pretty well as in allowing some but placing warnings when things seem to get out of hand. Most users will then actually follow those warnings (or lose write permissions in the very thread).

As said, I don't think it has happened here yet, but someone may as well post a clip with lyrics including a strong political background.

Certainly a valid question.

Lyrics are fine as long as they're not being posted in a effort to slide politics in, "under the radar" and the best way to proceed if one wanted to post lyrics is what I used to tell my kitchen staff; when in doubt, throw it out. If you think it has the possibility of being perceived as political or think it could potentially spark debate, throw the idea away.

The shitty part is that you never know when someone is going to fly off the handle. The first perma-ban for politics here was because someone thought a joke completely unrelated to politics was a political jab and he wrote a "I'm telling the whole world what I think of everyone and everything" diatribe that if any employer saw would have caused a termination of employment, never mind a ban from a forum. And that was after repeated warnings.

Valid question, but this place is a haven for metal and hard rock. The lyrics we would be discussing are pretty far removed from protest songs and stuff like that, so it's probably a problem that would not arise here with the present crowd.

Bro, have you heard the first few Lamb Of God albums? Rage Against The Machine? :rofl

I always enjoyed his posts. I didn't really find out about the memes/gifs until after he was gone as I'm not much of a 'I want to see several memes in a row" person so I never check the funny pic thread, but as for gear/music talk he was a welcomed presence here, IMO.

You can actually tell a lot about a person by the pictures that he/she/they/them/whatever posts in that thread. I know that I have made mental notes as far as who finds humor in which things, which has influenced my interactions here. As in, "Okay, this guy finds humor in everything, but this other guy has the potential to freak out over stupid shit without warning."

Rage Against The Machine ain't metal! :hmm

This is all fine with me (and unlike my warning, the likeliness of me coming up with any lyrics at all, let alone politcal ones, gravitates towards zero). But then, what if someone would come up with RATM alike lyrics? Their political content at least partially would be the reason for the band having been the band that they were.
If you were in that camp, wouldn't you post you're music here because of the "no politics" policy? Wouldn't that even be a loss?

As said, I know it's a pretty difficult topic to deal with. That's why I brought it up.

Hahahah that's another reason why I don't visit it, it's started the countdown-to-banned-status more than once. :rofl

Yeah, I saw those as well. And noted that those particular images weren't getting any responses. No laugh emojis, but no meltdown responses, either. That tells you that the majority of the people here are more likely to sidestep shit like that than they are to cause a shitstorm over it.

If the band is formed for the intent of making a poltical statement then they're better off not posting their music here. I think that's a bit different than a song potentially having a political message. The same way a black metal band showing up and posting anti-Christianiity lyrics would get booted for breaking the no religion rule, or some skinhead punks posting some Aryan race bullshit would be booted for bigotry.

Here's some exampples of the not-specific lyrics I'm talking about-

Floyd's cover of "Rise Up Rise Up"; reading the lyrics you don't know what it's specifically about unless you know the history of the song. But it's certainly political as it gets and most people aware of it do know Floyd covered it for the pro-Ukraine response.

REM's "Losing My Religion"; it says the word 'religion', but whether or not it's actually about religion is up for interpretation.
