Axe-FX (A Love Story?) Rd.1

I’ve CPU locked the the thing several times on a pretty basic series signal path, trying to work in the Plex Delay and certain Pitch blocks. If I’m capping the thing with the simple presets, I know I will ultimately find it limiting when I start trying to get more creative.

I would have went with one of the other units to begin with, but I wanted to dip my toes in the water first.

For the extra 200 get the Turbo
If you can swing it IMO

Ok, so the FM3 is half the power of the FM9, which is half the power of the AxeFX, and the Turbo FM3 and Turbo FM9 is 10% Moar powerful than the Turtle Editions, but the AxeFX Turbo is 25% more power than the AxeFXIII Turtle Edition?

One thing to note about the FM9: pure processing power comparisons aren't the best because of some specific things about the FM9:

• Reverbs run on a dedicated core
• Delays run on a dedicated core
• Amps run on a dedicated core

Depending on your use case, you might find the FM9 is about 75-80% of the (non-Turbo) Axe Fx III.

Is there some non-obvious reason to avoid the AxeFX Turtle vs the AxeFX Turbo? Before I eat it, I want to make sure that some Super Duper High Res 4k Delay Generator 5000 isn’t only available on the Turbo Championship Edition.

Nope... It just comes down to money and processing power.

I’d be seriously surprised if the FM9 Turbo wasn’t powerful enough. The main drawback being having to wait for cutting edge updates to migrate from the III.

Needless to say I look forward to reading about your upcoming experiences with the Axe-Fx III Turbo.

Nope! Basic is wah, compressor, drive block, amp, cab, chorus, delay, reverb. The FM3 can do that all day long.

I bought an OG AXE III from these guys back in the day. Fantastic buying experience, they flashed it to the latest firmware for me prior to shipping and the woman I talked with on the phone was a joy to work with. She was walking her dogs while she was helping me out, talking on her cell phone and was wonderful. They don’t sell Fractal anymore but they were just great to work with.

I ended up selling that for whatever reason and ended up with a FM3 (not enough power baby) and then ended up selling that (and a Helix Floor because I thought I wanted a FM9) and landed on a used AXE III Mk2. for $1850 off of Chris Hurley over at TOP (FM9 waitlist was a real bitch). Great guy. I hardly ever buy new anymore for better or worse.

I’ve got some crazy presets with tons of routing and haven’t come close to maxing this thing out. I’m so glad I opted for the III and didn’t wait out the FM9.

You can’t go wrong with the Mk.2 but it never hurts to have the latest greatest... expensive, but you get what you pay for and it will last.

I run the Axe-FX III mark I and never have CPU usage issues. This has the same CPU power as the current Mark II standard. That said, the price difference is quite small and I would suggest getting the Turbo because you can't go wrong with more power.

Too big for the desktop, and if I’m going to hide it under the desk why not get the AxeFx Megatron Edition? Though I could park it under the desk and use it’s footswitches rather than go the FC route. Who knows.

The FM9 is housed in the exact same chassis as the FC12, so it would occupy the same floor space. If you're using it exclusively at your desk, it's a"park it and forget it" either way. So it comes down to horsepower and cost.

I think where the problems is when you try combining worlds
If you really want that Amp where I'm at keep 1 tube amp , if you play country or classic rock or love Brad Paisley get something like a DRZ wreck something that does one thing really well
Then for your studio get a Fractal
For when you feeling like recording or get the FM9 and use it for effects

Once you start the I love the DrZ but I need to put it into a two notes cabM IR loader and then I need Midi switching so I need a RJM amp gizmo
That’s where things go bad

So I think I’m going to dump the Turtle Edition. Good intro to the platform, but I need to harness the power of all da blocks

The Turtle is not that device.

I didn’t give enough thought to the potential limitations of that version. (Though to be fair I’m not sure I would have dove in first with the AxeFx, so the Turtle was the gateway)

Unfortunately I didn’t come to that realization in my return window, so I’m going to eat a big ole bag of dicks re-selling the Turtle.

If any of you freaks want a 5th or 6th Fractal device to serve as the backup for your device in the guest bedroom, hit me up.

Time to browse for racks.
