WHAT IS GOING ON WITH GIBSON??? - Unfiltered

Maybe there was truth to the rumour about them moving all manufacturing to overseas ?

Gibson can do what the hell they want .
I won’t ever be buying another Gibson guitar or amp .
I get most of my Gibson hats caps T shirts and hoodies from TEMU 🤣👍

I want to like Gibson (the company), but I just can't. I gotta call bullshit where I see it. I have a CS SG (bought new) and it's excellent. But it was also built in 2008 before most of the bullshit, and pretty soon, a fucking high-end Epiphone price tag will prolly overtake what I paid for it (well, I'm stretching things here for emphasis of course, but not by a whole lot - I can already tell you that Casino for $4K plus beats it).

Alright, that does it - I'm putting on my entrepreneur hat and selling this:

COMING SOON!

Gibson® BRAND TOILET PAPER!

At last! You can finally wipe your ass with a genuine Gibson product! Just like you've always been wanting to!

(and hey, if Gibson doesn't like it, they can fucking sue me... because of course they will!)

I do like the finish. The neck joint and especially that headstock though....oof.

Perhaps this little beauty is more your style - MSRP $4999 when it was available, and dig that upper fret access!

:p

Excuse me for asking, but, ah... how do you play anything on the 17th fret and above with that? I mean, the heel... :p

Never had any issues with upper fret access :idk I used to mock people and say they needed to work on their technique but these days I’ve mellowed and I’ll just chalk it up to the shape/size of my hands and preferences

I have yet to play any “improved heel”/fret access guitars that I’ve noticed a meaningful difference on :idk

I’m largely not picky/affected about neck profiles either

They don't call it the "Freckled Clown" for nothing:

(disclaimer: post writer takes no responsibility for high blood pressure or aneurysms caused by Trogly's uber-nerd teenaged vocal timbre)

Objectively I think one might be able to argue that like… the heel/cut on a 594 is vastly superior to an LP, but in real world application I don’t personally experience any improved flexibility or playability on the upper frets between my 594 and LP

Like… I guess what I’m getting at is that tons of people have issues with strat knob placement too. I’m not one of those people but I have no desire to invalidate others experiences either

That's easy: Get a Charvel.

Oh and there's a difference between having an opinion and trying to invalidate others' experiences.

Also, I was fucking with ya on the fret access. Had an '89 LP Custom black beauty bought new in '89 and used it thoroughly for a few decades... but it was the SG which showed me the ways of the Force.

I’ve offed two S types this year, but have had passing charvel gas for a minute

Next guitar purchase probably gonna be biting the bullet and overpaying for a strandberg tho despite my constant bitching

We dissing the (admittedly absurd) pricing of certain epis up in here yet strandberg is getting away with $2-3k indo corteks

I don’t have a huuuuuge sample size, but for all the internet stories about Gibson QC, I have to say that I feel like I’m more likely to pickup a Fender that needs some major tweak age to get to playable than Gibson. They have been making great guitars the last 7-8 years.

The Murphy Lab stuff all seems a bit wonky - both in terms of how much the price premium is, and that it just doesn’t seem like a fully vetted product at any price, much less 6k+. My biggest issue with them is that they don’t feel old or broken in at all. On an old Gibson, the checking on the neck feels completely smooth from years of playing/polishing where checking on back of headstock and elsewhere has texture. On the two Murphy Labs I’ve played, the back of the neck felt the way the headstock should feel - like it just checked yesterday and nobody has played it since The Incident that caused the checking.

The opinions here seem to be more about a preference for the type and style of guitar rather than the cost. E.g. shredder vs traditional. You'll see high prices across quite a few brands and styles. Oh and almost forgot, preference for or against the manufacturer. I see some strong preferences based on brand name on this forum. Ain't no thang. S'all good. If they're guitars, I love 'em all! Politics and corporate practices? I ain't got no time for all that.

My bass player has a rather expensive Dingwall that’s still made in China… but I’ll be damned if it’s not one of the best sounding and well constructed basses I’ve ever heard

I kinda dig it
To each their own. I love the sound and playability of SGs, but think they look dumb AF. But teles had to grow on me, too, and I still can’t say I thing Jaguars or Mustangs look like anything other than toys.

Lots of great music to be made in all of them, though.
