What’s your “all-around” guitar?

I've gigged for many years bringing and SG and a Stratocaster as a backup/alternative voice.

But in the last 10+ years I've decided I don't care about versatility anymore and I bring only Les Pauls or a Les Paul and an Explorer if there's some heavy stuff in the set list that deserves the Explorer look.

I, unfortunately, play only covers these days but I don't care about mimicking the original tones (and even parts when possible): I like what I like and I play how I play.

Granted I'm free to do that because I play for fun and not for money .

Same. I gave up on the pursuit of "one guitar to rule them all," as a concept worthy of trying to breathe life into.

I want specificity and character and quirkiness and limitations. I just find it more interesting as a musical approach
than trying to pigeon-hole a guitar into every shape when it is not even possible, and maybe not all that desirable. :idk
 
I've owned this one for probably 20+ yrs now. It sat in a case for 8 yrs or so because I didn't really bond with it. One day suddenly I did and it became the one from that day on

aMEN. limitations character and quirkiness are the fricken lifesblood of real music anyhow. run what ya brung like you stole it!

Absolutely this.

Same concept but in a different context:

I have a friend who's playing in a trio for the first time and he's struggling to get the most out of it.

He still see the trio like a band with a missing guitarist while, as I've told him, is a band with an added opportunity.

Damn I'd love to find a trio myself! I hate him lol 😂 that's not true I love him anyway.
 
Since I only gig originals I just stick to a fairly simple palette of tones. I don’t own a guitar that does it all. I’ve always bought guitars for the unique sonic qualities they bring to the table.

Imagining myself in a cover band, probably a HSS Strat? I’m able to cover some ground with the LP Special and the P90s, maybe that.

1980s Fender Japan “Sonny” Telecaster.

It works for most of the music I play. I used it on stage for a solo guitar set and also at jam sessions at local venues for jazz, funk, and blues. Good for home noodling, too.
 
Of the ones I currently own, and even though I generally consider myself to be a Les Paul guy and my R8 is my most used guitar, I think it would have to be this one:

If I were to buy one specifically for this purpose, I’d probably try to find a nice PRS 513 or a nice HSS strat.
Yeah, I think i may try to find a nicely beat up 513. 👍

I have 3 guitars, one for a specific use. But, I would say... My modified PRS S2 Standard 22Darth Paul is my "all around" even if it's on drop C.




The reason why I would call it my "all around" because of the many options it gives me:
  • It has 2 mini toggles, the front switch is for the neck p/u, and the rear switch is for the bridge p/u. In the "downward" positions, the pickups are in series. In the upward positions, the pickups are in parallel. They give the guitar tremendous control over the guitars overall tone depending on what position the switches are set to, and what the Megaswitch is set to.
  • The tone control is normally out of the circuit. It is engaged when you pull the tone knob up. It is a 250k CTS pot with a .01uF CRL ceramic disc cap. It will give a clean tone, an overdriven "blues" tone, or a high gain tone. It will have the full potential of the p/u's output when the tone knob is "down" in its normal position, since the tone pot and cap are disengaged in that position.
  • The volume pot is a 1 meg . This will result in the most output the pickups are able to produce, short of wiring them directly to the jack.

I kinda look at it like, “if life goes sideways and I have to sell off all my gear, what guitar would I hang onto the longest hoping to keep it?” and that’s the silver one in this pic.

They’re almost identical guitars, but something about the silver one just inspires me to keep playing it. Written TONS of music on it and tend to forget how much I love it when I don’t play it for a bit, but when I do pick it up, the mojo just radiates from it.

I think, at the moment, I have about 15 guitars and basses, but this silver one is THE guitar for me.
