Wazzup?? I'll Open Up With Something Controversial: What Guitarist Don't You "Get"?

I kinda chuckle at Bonamassa, just the fact this white kid who came from a middle class family in the suburbs managed to turn himself into a 1%’er by playing blues music. Totally respect what and how he does what he does, dude banks on himself and doesn’t rely on promoters, runs a staff of about 20 people and DIY’s everything. He’s also made no bones about the decision to market himself by throwing on a pair of shades and a suit, which is basically when his career went from guy-playing-shit-clubs to legit venues.

I see where you're coming from, but didn't Sabbath. start out originally as a blues band? I'm thinking of back when they were called Earth, and previous to that, Polka Tulk, playing mainly blues standards?
True but everyone started somewhere, its who they became and were/are known for that counts in my book
Take for Example does anyone remember Pantera in their Glam Hair band days ?

I think if any influence on those early proto-metal bands had on each other was more in the “Shit, those guys aren’t afraid to just go for it, rockin’ out, let’s do that too”

There’s an aspect of both Zep and Sabbath that I tie to their upbringings, everyone in Sabbath will tell you that being raised in Birmingham had a HUGE influence on their music, those guys grew up poor/working class. The music is bare bones and raw. Then you got Zep, who I believe all but Bonham grew up middle class or better and these big, epic tunes with crazy production (for the time), experimentation, Eastern influences, etc.

With Sabbath it’s like these guys came from shit and just played what came out, as where you had Page in Zep, well established as a studio guy by the time Zep was formed, using the studio/band as a creative palette.

Yeah, if there's one thing I hate, it's songwriters writing about things they care about.

If you disagree with his POV, use it as a opportunity to present a counterpoint. And don't buy his records. But telling an artist to "shut it" is basically equivalent to telling an artist not to be an artist.
Mustaine did this best. Presented his opinions in his lyrics. The minute he became super vocal about things is when he realized he should probably stfu and let the music do the talking.

What starts out as an idealized band of brothers in these groups we revere so much much ends up being a long road to a brand of people who don't like each other :rofl Trying to keep your ideologies in sync over decades has to be insanely difficult.
For the guitar playing, yes. But the songs were cheesy. Ozzy was in his Golden Girls era. He was channeling his inner Blanche.
Golden Girls FTW!

For sure both bands were based on blues.
I was responding to your post that Zeppelin more so than Sabbath took blues based music to another level creating heavy rock.
The delineation of when heavy rock emerged is where we differ in opinion.

Fair comment.
My personal take on it is this... Zeppelin took a more bluesy heavy rock route, with folk and celtic/eastern influences added to the mix, whereas Sabbath took a more heavier, doomier at times route, and in doing so became, really, the forerunners of heavy metal.
I actually come from Birmingham, UK, and have always been proud of what Sabbath achieved. Zeppelin, on the other hand, have always been my favourite band, ever.
😊👍

I don’t disagree with this whatsoever.
When Sabbath released their first album I was hooked.
Hence my preference .
Good music is good music 🤘

Re blues: you can't play rock or metal lead parts and not have at least some blues playing capabilities. I mean amateur djent kiddies try but it sounds like crap ...
The better you become at guitar the more you understand why someone like Clapton was a master and why bb king was ... well .. king in his simplicity!

A master of what? Inciting naps in the listener? Other than the best song he ever released obviously
