Valeton GP-5

Some reading about Snaptone "training" ... a simple NAM loader and crappy training wav file into a watered down profiling engine.
Sorry to rain on the parade, but Snaptone s*cks.

I posted on Reddit :

PS : i tested almost all profilers in the world : neural DSP, THU Rig Player, Mooer MNRS 2.0, ToneX, NAM ... i know when a profiler fall short. Like Snaptone.

Look as always, each to their own and all that sort of stuff.

See my thread here and the attached audio clip in this thread comparing the GP5 with the exact same file and exact same IR and exact same settings to the NAM Player

If you or I or anyone else cant do some ultra-miniscule EQ tweaking in like literally 5 seconds or less to make these for all intents and purposes "identical" then the problem is not the gear.

Don't worry about numbers or training files :) - its the sound that matters - if the above audio file cant convince you, then I doubt anything will.

In fact just before going o/seas - 3 weeks ago I used the GP5 in the Loop of my HX Stomp for a 3 "classic rock" rehearsal - having previously used a Tonex One and full Tonex - with the same Amalgam files - it was just astonishing and felt and sounded no better or worse than the Tonex Pedals.

But if your ears hate it - there's nothing I can do to change your mind - all that matters is how it sounds to you.

Yes, your test sounds good. Just a little "over compressed" on the Snaptone side.
But my experience 'especially with high gain 5150 like amps) was not that nice ;)

I still use my GP200LT every day for practice and I really enjoy the sound and convenience. Does it sound as good as my FM3, definitely not, but it is what it is and for what I use it for It’s a great unit.

I prefer Hotone mk1 and Valeton gp5 gp200 amps to snaptone any day.
Problem is not mfx quality, they are very good.
My problem is snaptone only.
Too much cut corners to me.

As I said above - as always - each to their own ears :) - that's all that matters

I used the Amalgam NAM Carr Mercury V Drive and IR for each - GP5 and NAM Player - and they are both fantastic - quite literally, all the GP5 needs is a bit of a cut to the lows in the GP5 and a micro boost to the Highs - once I did that 5 second tweak, even I couldn't tell the difference in the room live or via my monitors.

For Live purposes, through my Matrix and Celestion FX1200 setup, my Global EQ is always set, give or take to 100hz <-> 4kz ..... this is regardless if its my Tonex or my full Gigfast NAM iPad or my HX Stomp or my FM3 etc...... even with a Global EQ set to 100hz <-> 4kz, there are bucket-loads of harmonic overtones still coming though way above the 4khz range.

If you are worried about the GP5 not being "good enough" - which honestly I don't get - just replace the default Valetone "Input NAM Re-Training File" with the NAM Standard Training File and then do the Snaptone NAM Import - I cant try this as I'm away from my studio for the next 3 months - but I dare say this would get the GP5 NAM Snaptone Import even "better" than it is if that is what you "need to hear".

Personally though I think thats pointless and unnecessary.

All the best from Europe.

Is it really possible to run a capture and an IR simultaneously on the GP-5?

Good question... I don't think you can have a separate NAM + IR (or a CAB) in GP-5.
I heard rumors that it will be possible at one point in the future to run NAM+IRs, but with the current version (1.0.6) I didn't think you can.

That's what I thought and it's also what someone in a german forum (who just bought the thing) said, so I was wondering about the statement in the linked thread.

You're saying that you're loading the same IR inside the NAM plugin and the GP-5. Is it really possible to run a capture and an IR simultaneously on the GP-5?

My bad - I thought I made it clear in my test post I linked to :(

It was the same Amalgam Carr Mercury V DI NAM Capture in each - I used the same IR for each and loaded the IR into the Helix Block and the IR into the NAM Player Block with zero cuts etc....

You can of course load a full NAM Capture - Amp + Cab baked together - into the GP5 Snaptone Block if you need.

Hope this clarifies.
