Universal Audio OX Stomp

1.5 minutes playing Synergy bassman module through the 6 onboard factory presets is promising. The plate 'verb is :chef Don't know that I'd wanna combine it with another digital device, but for a general purpose "everything I need after a preamp" thingy, it seems really great. Putting a Stomp in that position just turns into a "Lemme try a bunch of stuff I don't need and never use after the preamp because it's there" kind of a thing. And I like this 'verb way better, even with no tweaking.

@ejecta - how is the app working for you? Super spotty for me on an iPhone XR. Sometimes the slider recognize my attempt to move it, other times not so much. Overall on the one hand I like how it doesn’t show values for the hi/low cut frequency, etc., because it just allows you to edit with your ears instead of your eyes, but wish I had some finer control (especially on compressor and verb settings) - probably works better on an iPad than a phone?

Finally, I think it’s a winner for me. Was able to pretty quickly use the bassman module to get everything from an early Marshall 1/2 stack type sound with the greenback 4x12, to traditional bassman sounds with 4x10, modern smoother sounds with the g65 cab etc. balancing the room sound against the plate verb is super easy and versatile. Plate can go from fairly subtle always on to a pretty blooming church tone thing with a bit of Predelay and longer decay.

Honestly I don’t use the app. I registered it to get the other cabs and that’s it. It’s so easy to use in the pedal I don’t bother with the app but I will to see if I have the same issues

I’ve been using it for a bit now. Overall, it’s been very solid for me.

I haven’t run into the Bluetooth connection issues others mentioned early on—so either they’ve already fixed it in a firmware update or I’ve just been lucky. Latency-wise, I haven’t measured it, but nothing feels off to my ears. It’s responsive enough.
The sounds are quite interesting, and I’m especially digging the room mics.
I’ve managed to tweak my core tones to fit into the available presets, so now my workflow doesn’t even rely on the app. 3 Brit 4x12 and 3 Mesa 4x12 are actually enough for me. I just switch between presets and, if needed, adjust the mic levels or the amount of room. Super fast and intuitive once things are dialed in.
Honestly, the reason (price was good on a new one off Reverb) I bought the OX Stomp in the first place was after going back and listening to a bunch of my favorite albums in Logic Pro, isolating guitar tracks using stem-splitting, and realizing how much room tone is there. So now when recording or just noodling this pedals is always on. I use it with Suhr load.

Got an Ox Stomp in today.

Early impressions right now, it sounds WAY better than the Fractal Dyna Cabs and various third party impulse responses I have been playing with. It hits the right frequencies, the midrange push and clarity and avoids the harsh high end. Night and day difference. Seems perfect for low to mid gain stuff, high gain may be trickier but I only messed with some presets here. For ultra high gain maybe a sculpted IR may be better.

It's really nice to have the primary controls on knobs so you can dial things in to taste. Much better than using a mouse. Although not all parameters are available from the knobs.

The complaints about the app are real. It connected once, then refused to connect and forced me to reboot the pedal, and now it's kind of working again. The only thing I'd want to use the app for is to select the cab and mics, then save it down as a rig that you can select from the pedal itself.

The post effects sound really nice but are honestly kind of useless. You have to use the app to control them, and in some cases that's not giving you anywhere near what you need. For instance the delay time is only controllable via a slider and there's no tap tempo that I can see, so you can't set up stereo dotted eight and quarter note delays. You have no idea what the delay time is at all. Reverb seems to be a fixed plate so that's not bad but you can't control anything from the pedal. The EQ seems really good and that could actually be useful for presets. Otherwise I would ignore all those effects.

Will obviously give it a solid go with all my modelers, but right out of the gate, it seems like it could be the solution to the issues I've been having with the Fractal amp tones. Next up will be hooking up my Friedman JJ Junior via the Suhr reactive load!

I understand why they made the amp sim pedals the way they did. Even embraced their exclusion of midi for them, (although I sold them all largely because of that weakness/flaw or what ever you want to call it) BUT the Ox Stomp really is worthy of a design that has a bit more control with at least a minimal display of what you are controlling. And, god forbid, midi.

If I could change one thing about UA it would be to make them create the full featured ‘Ox Studio’.
A desktop box that has their amp sims, cab, speaker, mic, room, etc and a few of their effects. SPDIF, usb audio, stereo.

Yeah they need a desktop controller and a way to chain effects. I don't see that happening though.

I'm fine with the Ox Stomp being what it is...I bought it knowing what I could and could not control from the front. I had no expectation of using the extra post effects. But it could be way better, and potentially could be a more versatile post-amp solution.
