I like the novelty of the robo-tuners and I'll probably keep mine until they stop working and repair is no longer feasible.
My perspective is slightly jaded due to an embedded systems project I built in '91 while studying computer engineering @ UCF.
I designed and built a one string proof-of-concept guitar with automatic tuning. Used a Motorola 68HC11 project board and processor along with a way-to-big stepper motor attached mechanically to the tuning key, controlled by an external box with a 4x48 character LCD display and a numeric keypad salvaged from an old military radio.
That was a great class!
