The wife and I try to stay healthy.

Calorie counting doesn’t work.

Well, that's true if only relay on that and nothing else.
(or if you do stupid mistakes like eating a cakes after the workout, hoping that your body won't convert those sugars into fat to make you a favour)

Within the boundaries of a reasonable balanced diet (winch is the most important thing) burning calories through sport works 100% of the times and knowing how much you're burning and eating is a good road map.

Instead of replying to each thread I’ll just say:

We don’t eat processed foods except vegetables that are processed by being frozen.

We don’t eat sugar and the only reason we have some in the house is for feeding the yeast when we make bread or pizza (not very often).

The wife enjoys a soda once in a while, I do not (can’t stand them).

We don’t eat the sea bugs or pig products for religious reasons. That made keto hard as bacon is a huge part of it.

We don’t do alcohol but we are trying it with dinner as part of the Mediterranean diet. We are not fans of wine at all.

We mostly gave up on the gym but I lift heavy weights and wrestle a machine every weekday for my job. The wife has a stationary job so we should be trying to get there again.

Calorie counting doesn’t work.

Basically, there’s no where else to turn for me except dietary restrictions of food groups. Keto does work for both of us and we will probably, begrudgingly, go back to it this winter.
Restricting food groups is not a healthy longterm plan and calorie deficit is the only reason people lose weight. Not all calories are equal in nutritional terms or satiety so choose wisely. Lifestyle changes that work for you are the only way. Counting calories isn’t about a” diet “ it’s just a part of a knowledgeable reset and once you get it under control you don’t need to do it.
Most people seriously overestimate their activity and seriously underestimate the calories in the food they eat. Another thing most people do is not drinking enough water. Often when you feel hungry you are in fact thirsty.

IMO, there's no way to mess up a fresh red snapper, wahoo, redfish, mackerel, speckled trout, etc... Taste wonderful, UNLESS you overcook them. Biggest mistake most make with fish. They cook very fast.

Carbohydrates are necessary and Keto diets usually lead to a short term loss a water weight not much fat . Active healthy lifestyle is powered in the here and now by carbs. Problems start with insulin imbalances and an excess of available glucose. Low glycemic index foods fix this if the energy is not required in the short term. Also keeping you feeling full. Keto diet does share some of these benefits but you are lacking important nutrients.
Keto is a diet and diet don’t work because at some point you need to come off them. I wish you every success but do find something you can sustain as a lifestyle or it won’t work.

Keto is more of a lifestyle than a diet though. The meal prep is just of a style that requires a stay-at-home person that generally doesn’t exist any more. Cutting carbs works mostly because that’s where most of the garbage is.

We just don’t like it. Gonna skip it.

Counting calories doesn't work because the foods you eat and how much have a huge impact on how many calories your body burns. Calories burned numbers from a watch or app or whatever can't capture this accurately.

If you don't like fish, poultry and lean beef and lamb are good alternatives. Keto isn't about bacon and really shouldn't be. You do need some fat in any healthy diet, but you can do that without fatty cuts like bacon, and without the salt and nitrates that come with it.

An alternative to keto or Mediterranean would be a Japanese diet. Not low carb, but lower portion sizes, low sugar, and lower vegetable and seed oils. They eat a lot of fish though.

Keto isn’t healthy over time.

Yeah, we just don’t like it. I can’t see incorporating it into our diets on a regular basis. I get the health benefits though. Maybe we can hide some inside something else like giving a dog a pill.

Ew, that sent shivers down my spine. Bleh!!
The only "seafood" we ate when I was a kid was when my mom made salmon loaf.

:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops:

It took me a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time to come around to the idea of fish. And I get why you might not ever come around :nails:rofl

We have a local Japanese place that sells a salmon and shrimp rice bowl and lordy lordy lord is it :chef:chef:chef:chef:chef

You might be able to change your mind on things. Or not; and that's OK.

I can but I’m at least going to try to get the smell out of the house first.

Oven baked fish can be really gross and mushy. Some types of fish also get mushy when cooked.

My local grocer sells "fresh" salmon...it may or may not have been frozen at some point but it's thawed and in the refrigerated section when I buy it. That cooks up well regardless of how I make it. Air fryer works really well honestly, it's like oven but can get a bit crispy on the top. Smoking on the pellet grill is great as well, I can either smoke low and slow or just grill like normal and it still gets a good smoky flavor on top. Pan frying is super easy with a little butter or olive oil, cooks up really fast and can get a nice little crust on top. Oven baked to me turns the texture to mush and you don't get a good crust.

If you're cooking for two, there's a neat tabletop unit called the Ninja Woodfire that looks intriguing. It's like an air fryer pellet grill combo. I watched some videos on it last year and it seems really effective if you don't need to cook for a lot of people. Might be worth a look if you don't already have a grill as you can just use it on a small table and pack it up and store.
