A while back we both let our weight get out of control and we did keto for like 3 or 4 years. We hit our goal weights in 6 months and kept the weight off and then joined the gym. However, we greatly tired of the same old foods over and over and the long food prep times and eventually started gaining weight again. I’m like 15 lbs over so we are trying the Mediterranean diet as there is a greater variety of foods.

Tonight, we tried fish as it’s a part of the diet. Cod with seasoning and lemon. And let me tell you, it was gross. Neither of us could finish it and we gave it to the neighborhood cats. There has got to be a better way to get Omega 3s.

We’re going to keep trying this one but we’re just going to skip the fish meals. Bleh.

It's tough to find fish that isn't farm raised and we try to buy wild caught only. One exception is Ora King Salmon from New Zealand. Not exactly farm raised as I understand it, but not wild caught either. Really good stuff and a great source of omega 3.

We did have wild caught. I think we’re not going to try any more fish.

I think I've tried everything under the sun with varying degrees of success but as I get older I keep slowly gaining weight. I'm about 50 pounds over my ideal weight right now.

I decided all the diets where you need to cut out entire food groups were a bust and I need to do good old fashioned hard work. So I remembered a program I followed about 20 years ago to lose 35+ pounds and get into great shape that's loosely based on a bodybuilders routine. You need to work out most days mixing cardio and strength training and then you need to eat balanced meals with lean protein and carbs with starch and fiber.

Yesterday I planned out all my meals for the week, two different options each for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. And then family dinners which I typically cook but I can modify to make healthier. It's amazing how filling healthy food is when you have lots of protein, fiber, and starch.

For workouts, I started running 3x per week about 6 weeks ago and have shaved off over 2 minutes from my mile pace. So far no injury issues which is great, but I think eating more carbs has helped. Next up is planning out a strength training routine I can do at home with dumbbells.

As far as fish goes, I really only like salmon. That cooks up nicely just about any way I try, from smoking on a pellet grill to cooking in an air fryer to pan frying to baking. I'm in the midwest so the only fresh fish we have is walleye but it's not that popular anymore.

Seafood is so good. You cray lololol. Fish tacos are great. Seared ahi tuna is great. Big fan of fish n chips. Love to grill salmon. Sushi is awesome. My favorite is probably making ceviche. Had a life changing experience in Costa Rica just hanging at the beach all day body surfing and then buying random ceviche from the side of the road after. The salt from the ocean plus beer and/or tequila and then those citrus, tomato, onion, and cilantro flavors goes so good together.

I love that meme that's like bugs on dry land... nope. Bugs from the sea oh hell yea hahaha

More for you, brother.

Yeah I love fish. Sushi whenever possible is my favorite. But if you're going to get store bought or frozen fish get some tuna or salmon, and trout. Those seem to be pretty consistent. I do love fried cod but staying away from fried foods right now.

Portion control, balance of good carbs, lean proteins, healthy fats, fruits and veggies is all you need. Stay away from refined sugars, sodas, too much beer or alcohol, processed foods, etc. Cutting out gluten helps shave the pounds too.

I find that fish is one of the most difficult dishes to prepare properly. Matter of fact, just this past Wednesday, my girl and I were at a restaurant to hear a friend of ours play some music. She asked me what I was going to order and I said to her "You know we never cook fish at home because I often find it difficult to get it right, so I am going to have the Ahi tuna sandwich". Salmon is my favorite and I agree that it is one of the easiest to get right. As for farmed vs. wild, I was just in Norway recently and thought I was going to be having wild salmon every night. That DID NOT HAPPEN! It was not on the menu ANYWHERE and if any salmon was on the menu (which was itself a rare occurrence), it was farmed salmon. It is a long story that I will not go into here, but wild salmon is almost non-existent in the salmon capital of the world (Norway)!

As for the rest of eating right, I have eaten more salads in the past 3 years than I did in the rest of my life combined (due in part to a very eye opening medical experience in 2022). I still have not lost any weight because I have not included the exercise routine to go along with good intake habits ;~(( Maybe I will get off my ass one of these days and make that happen, I know my body would appreciate it (~40 lbs over my ideal weight at this point).

A very large part of not losing weight is simply eating too many calorie-dense foods. Processed foods, soda, and sweets & certain oils are big on that list. By the time you feel full, you've taken in more than you need.

This!

Avoid foods with useless calories and do some regular workout and you'll be fine.

By regular workout I mean serious workout, I mean burning hundreds of calories per session. Being it running, gym, swimming or riding is all good but you need to burn big amounts of calories per session.

If you keep your calories intake well under 2k per day and burn 2k per week you'll loose weight 100%

Try Haddock, it has a lot more flavour than cod IMO. It's also worth trying a different way of cooking your fish.

Yeah this is the method I've been following since May. I aim for 1800k per day and do some sort of exercise every other day and I've dropped 20lbs. Once I hit my weight-loss goal I'll bring my daily allowance up to 2400k per day and monitor my weight going forward. I've realised I need to make proper lifestyle changes and can't go back to old habits after I drop the weight or I'll put it all back on again.

I had a good laugh about two weeks ago when I hit 18lbs and realised I'd lost the weight of two Les Pauls. It was a bit nuts to hold my LP and realise I had been carrying two of these around with me all of the time!!!

A very simple way to cut down your portions is to just use a smaller plate. Many of us are used to filling the plate out of habit, so when the plate itself is smaller, you fill it with less.

It also helps to be more conscious about when you are actually full vs stuffing yourself because the food's there. I don't like leaving a restaurant feeling I need to be rolled out of there. I actually wish many places had smaller and cheaper portions instead.

I started going to the gym again this year and it has done wonders for my health. Lost weight, feel much more energetic, sleep better. Going to the gym is still a bit of a chore but once I'm there it's fine.

I have been a 4/5 times a week gym goer and a cyclist 50 miles a week for the best part of the last decade. I also eat low glycemic index foods nothing processed. . Works for me. You need to find food you like and not feel hungry all the time or it’s never going to be sustainable. Don’t have anything in the house that you shouldn’t eat because you will. Weigh yourself every morning first thing before you eat or drink anything and start weighing your food portions until you get used to the right size for each ingredient. Have snacks in that you can eat ( fruit, vegetables, nuts ) . It has to be something you can do for the rest of your life.
Exercise doesn’t have to mean the gym. It can be a brisk walk but it needs to raise your heart rate and last 20+ minutes. Again it must be something you like doing or it will stop.
Good luck.

in 2021 I was 15kg overweight and started to run again (only short distances to avoid injuries due to the extra weight) and spent few month on a 1500kcal per day burning 2100 kcal weekly (according to my garmin data)

After 6 months I was 10kg down, after 1 year I was 16kg down and run or rode mtb 3/4 times a week burning 3000kcal per week average and was back on eating whatever I wanted, Weitght went -18 from where I started.

In the last year, due to tendonitis, I had to slow down and I'm down to 2400kcal burned weekly and I have regained few kg, nothing alarming though. I'm 180cm, 72kg.

Instead of replying to each thread I’ll just say:

We don’t eat processed foods except vegetables that are processed by being frozen.

We don’t eat sugar and the only reason we have some in the house is for feeding the yeast when we make bread or pizza (not very often).

The wife enjoys a soda once in a while, I do not (can’t stand them).

We don’t eat the sea bugs or pig products for religious reasons. That made keto hard as bacon is a huge part of it.

We don’t do alcohol but we are trying it with dinner as part of the Mediterranean diet. We are not fans of wine at all.

We mostly gave up on the gym but I lift heavy weights and wrestle a machine every weekday for my job. The wife has a stationary job so we should be trying to get there again.

Calorie counting doesn’t work.

Basically, there’s no where else to turn for me except dietary restrictions of food groups. Keto does work for both of us and we will probably, begrudgingly, go back to it this winter.

The only things that have worked for me in the past was strict calorie counting and keto. Exercise helps, but you can't out exercise a bad diet, and you can't out exercise an alcohol habit either.

I'm 6ft2 and 97kg. I lose weight quickly when I want to, three years ago I was 84kg. But I am of course getting older, so it gets more difficult.

I stress/comfort eat and drink a LOT. I need better ways of managing stress, anxiety, and depression.
