The Rack Thread

they are very sturdy and i love the side panels are optional, you can access the cabling from the side by leaving them open. $250 for a 22U is a no brainer for a rack that's just gonna stay furniture

edit to add they come with screws with plastic washers, and the columns have threaded holes in both size thread, no messing with those little captive nuts in a cage

Awesome. Im not worried about the aesthetic, I just need something sturdy. Price is great.

Finally pulled the trigger:

Only been screwing with the presets so far, but really digging it. Lands you right in the zone.

Other rack shit:

Got that 22U AxeAccebles rack up. Solid for the money. The base and casters are really sturdy. The only knock is the rack screws on the bottom third don’t line up 100% so I’m just bottom screw mounting those, which is fine for a rack that’s not going to move. Top 2/3rds lines up great so all good.

I think I’m going to pull the trigger on that RedSeven MSLM mixer and wire that in to the second patch bay. The rewire I need to embark on is going to suck, but it should be pretty badass once done.

u need to loosen up the front two columns again and put gear in bottom middle and top, then tighten columns back down. they leave a lot of play in the base and lid mounting holes before you torque the fasteners down, no way that steel is actually bent

That's a clean unit. Might wanna go ahead and replace the internal battery.

Yeah, I haven’t popped the hood yet, but the dude said he had the battery mod installed. I first wanted to clear the hurdle of “does it make desirable guitar noises right out of the box” before nosing around in it. So far so good 🤞

What are you pairing it with? I've had one since 93, and used a Mesa Stereo 50/50 with it for decades. Loved the tones, and the switching capabilities for playing in a cover band!

So far the KSR PA100R. Gonna try the stereo rig this evening with LXII.

I just printed out the manual, so I can go full back to the future with the controller schema :ROFLMAO:

The mighty MP-1 !!!

The first preset on mine, (Not sure if it’s a stock preset or the old owners) absolutely throws the F down. I was immediately like:

Willem Dafoe Smile GIF

And there is a chorus clean preset that is :chef

Some of this old kit just does the damn thing by sheer vibe. (Or maybe just the mindset it puts you in)

And when you're in Solid State voicing, the OD2 is a compressor. I liked that a lot! ;)

This is my setup. I really need to get a rack case.

Do note that the VHT 2902 and E530 are inbound. I also have a Fryette PS-2. which I am looking to rackmount as well.

Need some advice. I have a 17U server rack which will fit all of these rack units, as well as a Universal Audio Apollo 8P and an RME Fireface 800.

In that order should I put them in? All the power amps towards the top and the preamps below them?

Also, would it make sense to not rack the audio interfaces in the same box as the preamps and power amps in the interest of longevity and avoidance of excess heat? Or is that not something to worry about?

Wrapping my head around all that with the different voicings.

You hit it with an OD or go raw? I’ll try it tomorrow with the drives but curious what sort of gear pairings people like.

I don't remember exactly what kinds of songs/solos I used it for, but if I wanted some grit, I most likely just used OD1, since I was never much into drive pedals of any sort. I always liked my distortion coming from my amps. If I needed a solo boost, I just set up a different preset and switched to it.

I just remember really liking the feel of that voicing b/c of the compressor. I probably used it on spanky shit, like The Fixx. (We used to do a lot of 80's new wave kind of stuff.) It was a solid state preset, but I still had the fullness of tubes b/c of my Mesa 50/50. That fucking rig sounded amazing! I always got complimented on my tone.

There's 3 voicings- Clean Tube, Distortion Tube, and Solid State. So that part is pretty straight forward.

One thing I do remember not liking was wanting just a little more bass on a preset, but say I was at +12, the next setting was +16. Really could've benefited with more incremental tone controls, especially on the bass, imo. But that was about the only thing I remember that I didn't quite like.

The chorus was fantastic, especially since that's where the stereo sound came from from. :rawk

Man that Mesa cab is screaming under all that weight. Lol

I'd put the power amps on the bottom, and not worry about heat, since I'd only be using 1 at a time. Pre amps up higher for ease of tweaking. Plus power amps low helps with center of gravity, since they're heaviest.

Thanks, will keep that in mind. No danger of the cab getting damaged, I hope. I did get those new power amps and other gear, will need to rethink my room arrangment.
