THE AMP SIM PLUGIN THREAD

They've always had an ear for modeling accuracy to real world amps.

This just arrived, always been curious why different JMP-1 models sound so different when (tolerances aside) setting them the same should be quite easy.

I can get Fractal sounding very close, obviously disabling power amp modelling and then dialling the active EQ by ear as the ranges/scaling seems different. STL Amphub sounds very similar too. Amplitube 5 sounds sort of OK, but not too close. Hard to tell if there is some power amp modelling involved but Im assuming so. Nembrini sounds totally different, which I'm baffled by.

Are you able to get anything legitimately from the 1959 and 2203 camp out of this preamp, or is it geared more towards the higher gained and compressed stuff?

It seems like such a cool preamp.

I wouldn’t say it does the 2203/plexi type sounds very well at all. It’s probably in part to my own tastes, but Around the Fur by Deftones is how I’d describe its tone. Maybe some overlap with the early Valvestates and TSL/JCM900. The palm mutes are fast and tight, it’s naturally quite midrangey but you can scoop it like an ADA MP1. Obviously running it into a valve poweramp with a hefty dose of presence and depth, it evens out the midrange to something big and balanced.

I’d say as well as deftones, it would do that Tony Hawk style punk well if you lower the gain a bit. I think it’s too fast/compressed/tight to do “classic” Marshall sounds.

I think I heard Michael Nielsens demo where the lower gain+compression+midrange honk sounded very ZZ Top.

A JVM or DSL based preamp would probably do a better job at doing “classic” Marshall, although the poweramp is so important for those….

anything legitimately from the 1959 and 2203 camp

JMP-1 has absolutely zero treble peaking on the gain pot, it shines with jazz chorus equivalent clean (read DI) and high gain lead, where the solid state clipping front end (from JCM900) gives you palm mute power without needing a boost.

anything JMP-1 that's not either "on" or "off" in the gain domain is kind of an "industrial metal sound effect", (read "lifeless" static) which is great if that's what you want, ran through a refrigerator of effects that's "the" sound of an era. But it's not at all like a Triaxis that gives you all the in between shades of real liquid gain and 15 years of real mesa edge of breakup tones. JMP-1 is a 1u yellow crowbar

Haven't spent a great deal of time comparing things, but the STL Amphub is pretty damn spot on and feels like a similarish experience to the real thing. I can get similar tones with Fractal but the experience feels pretty different, which sort of leads me astray to different tones. Sounds cool though and can do the same sounds (just way more that the HW can't too).

Amplitube sounds similar but no poweramp controls, which I think the JMP really needs for my scooped leaning ears. At first I thought Nembrini was MILES off but it turns out its just because I blindly copied settings from the HW, ignoring the fact that they didn't put an output knob, so you have to use the channel volume to determine how hard you slam into the power amp. What I like best with Nembrini is the look, and the controls have the same ranges and increments as the HW. It can be a bastard to use, but it gives you results and an experience closer to the HW.

Out of these, for the JMP experience, I'd probably lean most towards Nembrini, although STL can do a job too.

Fwiw, I just installed Amphub LE, which I got for free with my Novation keyboard.
This is their Eddy whatever amp:

WTF? This has got to be the worst color scheme I've seen in quite a while. By far. Let alone font of the labels is way too small.
Seriously, I don't get it.

make your plugin window and its fine. Although it probably should be a good deal brighter and more intelligible, I agree. By copying the layout of the real thing it's pretty intuitive to find what you need and the lack of clarity doesn't really impede that much. If things were scattered around in a way that didn't resemble the real amp, then the visual clues matter a lot more.

Dont think you can judge it off a super zoom screenshot. Here's a NeuralDSP with the same height as the STL one. STL is a bit wider but in the grand scheme they've always felt in similar ballparks to me.

The same comparison with a visually smaller amp inside of Amphub

It's not zoomed. And the other amps in Amphub LE look much better (just that the Ignite Amps were free before anyway). It's just the Eddy that is an epic fail in UI design.
Fail in UI design? Its the front panel of the amp. The model looks darker in comparison so I'd prefer it brighter. But you could overlay these ontop of eachother and its like for like.
