I wonder if the different Cab/Speaker usage with the various Marks being
discussed, relative to Treble and Presence settings, also plays a role in perceived
differences of bite.... or lack thereof. :idk
I would agree, I’m using DI out of mine and (with a loadbox, not cab clone) some IRs/cab sims are just “meh” and others are wonderful. I’d imagine it would be the same with real cabs

Open back. Closed back. Multiple speakers. Single speaker. So. Many. Variables. Not even
accounting for the actual speakers used themselves.... or itself.

im pretty sure it does. i have a pile of speakers ive run with mine- evm12l, emi dp12a, fane f70, celestion c90 & g12h30, and altec 417. in open and closed back 112, a thiele, and a 412. they ALL sound different- for sure. i think, probably the weirdest aspect though is configuration though cause theres a lot of places to get to similar places thatre just different enough from each other that one thing can poke out and ve annoying or amazing. and at different volume levels, its even more accentuated. but i think use case like that is kinda always the disruptor in talkin about any sound gear.

Do you have a favorite out of those? Or favorites for different sounds?

on the whole, for me, the evm.

BUT. im shooting at pretty classic blackface sounds, both clean and dirty and a mkiib and evms are a great combo for that.

that said- they all have plusses. the altec 417 does that SUPER well too- but alnico sounds somewhat compressed to me, and thats not 100% what i need. but gad what a great clean tone! dirty is gorgeous too- but not what i need cause its too pretty always, and i dont really always want that.

the celestions are celestions and feel light and awesome- the h30 sounds amazing, full, rock badassery with lotsa teeth at humane volumes, but it goes soft as it heats up and it has celestion ringing in spades. the c90 is bombproof, but feels thick. still good... not what i need cause they handle a little like a truck. the fane f70 is awesome- but does best to my ears in a closed back cab. in that sitch, its a super organic sound with everything thats good about celestions minus the buzz, most of the evms girth, and the altec's gorgeous natural airiness, and if i had a BIG closed 112, or another and a 212, i could be bothered to put my amp in a headshell and use that. but i have three evms.. so seems kinda a waste. i also used it with an eminence delta pro 12a in the top of a 412 and honestly- i think thats my favorite all rounder- but its a tough sell for moving it  im okay with evms in 112s.

so tons to consider- but right now, evs are sensible tonally minus the volume

its funny how marks are also pigeonholed into 'modern rock' a lot too- cause them turds do lots if classic sounds as well, but hell if they don't cause boomer resistance with the learning curve  im frightfully close myself.

i really absolutely do not care about metallica nor their sounds at all. ever.

I think my favorite pairing 🤌

I see! All good.
How do you usually dial a mark? Any boost?

I've never owned a real one.

But for Metallica MoP tone (on Neural DSP plugin), I follow this:

I think they have plenty of gain without needing a boost.

I use a boost to change the tonal character, I’ll usually find a spot I like, back the gain a bit and add a boost - maybe my ears are just addicted to it at this point. For MoP I would agree, no boost needed. I also have that plugin and it’s sick!

You know what is absolutely fantastic about the Mark V... it just doesn't NEED anything. It doesn't need an EQ or a drive pedal to tighten it up. It doesn't need a boost to get the right amount of gain out of it. It doesn't need fixing or correcting. I love the fact that the channel EQ's are your front-end EQ and the GEQ is your post-gain EQ. Brilliant amp. So so good.

You can of course boost it. I'm not saying you can't. Just that you don't need to.
