Struggling to Nail Early EVH Tones with EVH 5150 Iconic Series Amp

Oh yeah I agree about the playing part.
I will say that going from a Paf to a higher output can change subtle nuances in one's playing.
I have a Knaggs which had a JB in it which I found quite stiff sounding - I replaced it with a SD 78 and it was much more pleasing in its response etc.

Never found that with the JB but I do like stuff around 10-14k and paf style works for me too.

Honestly, I think the Iconic is like a modded Marshall on channel 1, and a 5150 on channel 2.

Thank you, everyone. I got the Phase 90, added a little delay, and switched to channel 1, and this is a lot closer. I still have a lot of work to do with the tone and my playing, but I am a lot happier with where I am with both.

Eddie used pretty light strings tuned down half a step, something like 9-38. He also used a pretty thin pick with those strings, which could help with all the percussive attack. That could be one pretty low cost thing to try, and could you help you get closer to attacking like Eddie.

He used sweetened tuning, EVH was all about what works outside the box, and well like everyone has said its mostly technique
and also to remember early EVH was NOT high gain

If you want early VH on any EVH amp, the key is low gain and high volume - then any EVH amp will nail it.

According to Chris Holmes, he had an Ibanez Destroyer, which was potentially used on some of Women and Children First, if memory serves.

Lower output PAF type humbucker and Super Distortion would likely be best for the DLR years. JB for the Kramer/Hagar 80s.
