Short Deluxe question

I use a helix and notice with the Deluxe Reverb it’s nice to have the bass and treble lower than the mid. So 5/5/7 (or around that).

Is that a normal thing for Fender amps?

Playing a Strat

This is normal. The real Deluxe Reverb has no mid pot*, but if the mid control was there it would effectively be set somewhere between 6 and 7.

Leo Fender decided that it didn't need a mid control because you can adjust the bass and treble controls around the mids to get the desired level of mids, more or less... it's not perfect but it's generally fine for most players. It was a front panel space and cost saving too.

The black panel Deluxe Reverb tone stack results in scooped mids, so it's natural to pull down the bass and treble in order to effectively boost the mids a little and balance out the tone.

* There's an internal fixed resistor with a value of 6.8K

Thanks for the explanation!

There really is some amp knowledge needed to get the most out of helix :)

This also seems to be the case for super reverb. Not for the Princeton.

Yep, agree with what's been said already.
I know with my twin reverb (has mid control), I run the bass very low. Usually I start it at 0 and nudge it til I start to feel it just come through and leave it there. That could be 1 or 2. Mids I may put at 7 or 8 and Treble around 5-7, or lower depending on if the bright cap is engaged.
A lot of people love 'upgrading' BF amps by using a Celestion voiced speaker because they accentuate the mids well. I used V30s in my Twin for a long while and they did a great job.

Also wanted to add, there is no wrong way to do this stuff. Especially in HX. Some love the really scooped sound while others love more throaty mids. As soon as you change the speaker IR the whole EQ thing fluctuates so you may have to adjust eq again. It's the biggest tone factor in the real amp too - the speaker. Adjust everything to sound good to YOUR ear.

It’s the first time with the Deluxe Reverb and the York Deluxe IR that I really like the tone

I am going to binge watch That Pedal show to see tips on the AC 30

Really cool

Sounds like you're going about the tone search at a good pace. Don't let us distract you with shiny objects. :ROFLMAO:

Haha I have a pretty good idea what I like sound wise. It’s the Fender amps, it’s the vox sound. Blues rock with a Stratocaster (or Tele).

The challenge is to learn about these amps so I know what to do with it haha

Vox seem more daunting. Fawn, Essex .. matchless … Carliton … 15 / 30

I really like the Matchless Spitfire circuit. So simple but very useful. I've actually built a few amps based off it. It captures that vox thing very well and just gets sweeter as you crank up that 15watts. In a lot of ways I prefer that sound vs. a BF circuit.

Sorry what is the spitfire? Is that dc 30 channel 1 ?

Not exactly. It's a very stripped down circuit, the input valve is used in similar fashion (parallel triode wired) but it's very minimal around that. Single tone control. Coupling cap value cuts more bass in the Spitfire -- into volume control out straight to phase inverter, and then a dead simple crossline master volume control. It just works very well and is an efficient circuit.

See all the knowledge is what I am really slowly building to the point that I know enough

For example, this I didn’t know and just learned. The tweakability is pretty cool that is “match(l)es” so much

The DC-30 is an EL84 powered amp though. They may have done other versions with EL34 though, not 100% sure. And other models.

Haha in the end I always end up with a clean sound with just a crispy on it and a good mid range.

Perhaps in that sense a fender amp sounds like a vox but then just with slightly different taste pallets. I love pizza, so a good Italian vs another good Italian will have a different approach but I will still love the pizza.

Perhaps now I finally understand the Fender amps a little bit … I want to see what I can do with Vox.

I might be an average guitar player (on a very good day) but I would never have experienced all these amps and sounds without Line 6. What a great product it is

So the latest thing has been volume around 8-9, volume on guitar lower.. that pedal show had a complete episode about the deluxe reverb

So far I don’t notice I need the bass a whole lot but maybe that will change today.

I also have not found a good use case to add an OD
