This thing got here half an hour ago. I barely got to play it but I did play it. Some quick highlights. Channel 1 is a Top Boost channel. It’s a more refined Vox AC30 Top Boost Channel. Low volume is clean and jangly. Mid volume starts getting compression and grit and hits that edge of breakup sound that these amps, the DC30 and the best AC30s are known for. High volume gets thicker but never super distorted. It’s a great rock tone but a little smoother and more refined than an AC30. Not much though. With a Tele and the volume up high it’s straight up Mike Campbell sounds. This is not a bad thing. It sounds great with the PPIMV engaged (more on those in a moment).

Channel 2 is based on the late 50s AC15s with an EF86 based channel. It has two EQ options: option one is using the 5 way tone switch as kind of a preset tone setup. The only negative to this is on this version of the BC30 it bypasses the master volume. So if you’re not prepared for that it will get heinously loud. If you flip the selector to the bass and treble control it gets an adjustable bass and treble and is able to use the PPIMV. There may be a way to mod this thing to get it so the 5 way tone switch works with the PPIMV circuit but I’m not hugely worried about it. I’ll see how it plays with pedals and if what I have works or doesn’t.

Other features: two switchable PPIMVs which are very usable despite hearing that the newer K-Masters were supposedly much better. They’re either in circuit or removed completely. This model was ordered without reverb. On the whole I’m not worried about it. I have pedals for that. No loop either. Again not worried. It does have a half power mode which is nice. Haven’t used it yet. It’s overbuilt better than any Vox I’ve seen. Seriously the build quality is excellent. And being that it has the same power section as an AC30 it can be monstrously loud. I remember my old AC30H2 was unusable at home until I got a Dr Z Brakelite. The masters are a boon here. And the circuit is well done that I don’t feel I need an attenuator.

Overall at first play I’m happy with it. It’s an excellent amp with my Greenback cab and I can’t wait to try it with my Metro 2x12 cab with Creambacks (that’s at the practice spot). I could have gone with a Hot Cat but I felt that kinda too close to stuff I already had (Metro, Orange). And while I have an American clean machine and pedal platform, I didn’t have a British clean and midgain machine. So I’m very happy to have this niche filled in my collection again.

niiiice! congrats!

i know i was a BC detractor- but by your description, that sounds awesome!

It seems to love my Greenback cab so I’m pretty happy with it so far! My old AC30H2 had Greenbacks in it (someone yanked the blues before I got it) and I liked that sound. It’s not the typical blizzard of nails sound of a Vox and blues. It’s more rock. So I kind of hoped I’d get something similar sounding here and - honestly - I have. I wanna get my captor on it and get some clips recorded.

😄 blizzard of nails! thats as close as it comes, man 😄

i had a friend with an ac15hw with a greenback that ive recorded quite a few times, and it was an awesome rock amp- so i know exactly of what you speak. thing could work in ANY context clean to ragingly turned out. absolutely brilliant amp- and im sure if its got the matchless bloodline that things made of great parts so it can only up the ante!

cant wait to hear it!

Congrats! I haven’t played this era of them, but the Black Cat is one of my all time favorite amps!

Bad Cats are crazy overbuilt, super reliable, and some of my favorite amps on the planet. It should serve you well :beer

Yeah this is an interesting era. It’s a 2012 according to the date markings on the chassis. So definitely has the older PPIMVs but only 1 input per channel. My switch bone will solve that. EF86 channel is pretty nice with the bass and treble control. Came with Ruby EL84s which are usually rebranded JJs. Might eventually swap to some NOS 6pN14ps. JJ rectifier too. This could be a fun amp to roll tubes in.

Those Rubys could possibly be the original tubes. Bad Cats are the type of amp where tube changes make a big difference, definitely fun to play around with rolling tubes in them!

If it’s like mine though the tube sockets have those metal sleeves the tubes fit inside, so some tubes don’t fit (or are a very tight fit) if the glass is too fat. I remember one brand of el84 being too fat to fit, but I forget which one.

What preamp tubes are in it?

I found this ticket a few days ago on my old iPad mini.
I’m not 100% sure but I think Steven Wilson had not long started using Bad Cat amps & Cabs for this tour of this brilliant new album at the time.
It was a great sounding gig 👍

By the time of this Royal Albert Hall show in London in 2017 he had been using Bad Cat for years.
He even brings a small combo on stage to make a point how good it is .
It’s included in the Film of the concert.👍

Seems to be Ruby 12ax7s. Didn’t look as much at those. The EF86 works well and isn’t noisy so I’m not about to change it lol.

Yeah if it isn’t noisy don’t touch it, haha. Those EF86s can be a bit temperamental!

I remember mine was hard on tubes and changing them out around once a year was kind of like putting fresh strings on a guitar - it opened up the sound of the amp again. If those are the original tubes from 2012 you might get a big improvement from swapping them out.

They very well may be. I’ll order a quad of 6p14ps this week. They’re not that much more than current production EL84s and are a bit of a hardier tube anyway.

I’ve heard some folks at the old place swear by changing their rectifier tube also. Easy enough to do with the power section.

Popped in the Cv4004s in V1 and V2. Lost a little gain on CH-1 but the amp seems a little warmer while still clear. Less peaky and spikey on that channel. Cleans are nicer too. I’ve had an extra set of 3 for a while as backups to the preamp tubes in my Metro (that’s what George picked for the amp when he designed it). May have to grab some more to have around. Great tubes. EF86 is currently a current production EHX. Doesn’t sound bad at all.
